(AP) — British national El Shafee Elsheikh was sentenced to life in prison Friday for his role in an Islamic State scheme that took roughly two dozen Westerners hostage a decade ago. Elsheikh's hostages gave him a somewhat whimsical nickname — he was dubbed a “Beatle” along with other English-accented captors — but the moniker belied the viciousness of his conduct. “This prosecution unmasked the vicious and sadistic ISIS Beatles,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Raj Parekh, noting that Elsheikh and the other Beatles always wore masks when they appeared in front of their hostages. He is the most notorious and highest-ranking member of the Islamic State group to ever be convicted in a U.S. Court, prosecutors said Friday at his sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court in Alexandria. The life sentence was a foregone conclusion … [Read more...] about Islamic State ‘Beatle’ gets life term for US hostage deaths

Libertyville Parents: How Has COVID Changed Your Family Life?
0 Kids & Family A U.S. Census Bureau survey found there's been more family dinner, parents reading to children. How's the pandemic shaped your family? Amie Schaenzer , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Reply LIBERTYVILLE, IL — Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, we've been bombarded with a lot of bad news. With cases spiking again amid the fast spread of the omicron variant, we have been inundated with updates on hospitals filling up, schools dealing with massive staff shortages, and some turning to remote learning, and an overall sense of fatigue from nearly two years of living in this new normal. Many families have been forced to navigate living with less from less daycare, to less schooling and the added responsibility of teaching children remotely, to less disposable income due to the rising cost of food, gasoline and many other goods. Some have lost their jobs. The picture has been grim through most of this but a … [Read more...] about Libertyville Parents: How Has COVID Changed Your Family Life?
Judge: Prosecutors cannot enforce Michigan’s abortion ban
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge on Friday blocked county prosecutors from enforcing the state’s 1931 ban on abortion for the foreseeable future after two days of witness testimony from abortion experts, providers and the state’s chief medical officer. The ruling comes after the state Court of Appeals said earlier this month that county prosecutors were not covered by a May order and could enforce the prohibition following the fall of Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court. “The harm to the body of women and people capable of pregnancy in not issuing the injunction could not be more real, clear, present and dangerous to the court,” Oakland County Judge Jacob Cunningham said during his ruling Friday. David Kallman, an attorney representing two Republican county prosecutors, said an appeal is planned. “The judge ignored all of the clear legal errors and problems in this case, it appears to me, simply because the issue is abortion,” Kallman told The Associated Press … [Read more...] about Judge: Prosecutors cannot enforce Michigan’s abortion ban

The mystery of the Cemetery Oak
Houston has bigger trees, and older ones. But for charisma, nothing beats the Cemetery Oak. It is, of course, a live oak — Houston's favorite tree — and it is, of course, a whole lotta live oak. Sixty-four feet tall; trunk wide as a Volkswagen . Like all old live oaks allowed to grow as they will, its twisty, fern-covered branches stretch farther outward than upward. The lower ones do their darnedest to brush the ground. That ground, notably, is Glenwood Cemetery, a marble-angels-and-Spanish-moss piece of the Old South, a stray piece of New Orleans hidden just off Washington Avenue, about a mile from downtown. It's a place designed for the living to mingle with the dead; a garden punctuated with gravestones. And nowhere do you feel that life-and-death connection more strongly than at the back of the cemetery, in the Forest Mound section, where among graves dating to the 1910s, the Cemetery Oak continues to thrive — a live oak that's very much alive, there among the dead. A … [Read more...] about The mystery of the Cemetery Oak

Local 1, the theatrical stagehands union, was calling to support his campaign for a state Senate seat representing parts of the Bronx and Westchester County, the latest development in a movement to gain political ground for America's more than 5 million arts workers. "That's fantastic. It means a lot to me," Amato said into the phone, between bites of avocado toast. "Listen, I'm on your side. I'm with you in this fight. ...
