LEBANON, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania township has announced the resignation of its police chief after an officer was charged with federal offenses stemming from the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of former president Donald Trump over the results of the 2020 election. The North Cornwall Township board of supervisors said in a statement read at Tuesday night’s meeting that chief John Leahy had “voluntarily elected to resign his employment.” Leahy had been placed on administrative leave with pay Feb. 20 as the township investigated Officer Joseph Fischer’s arrest by the FBI. Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Tuesday during a Senate hearing called out left-wing domestic violence over the summer amid an apparent attempt by Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) to use the January 6th Capitol breach to tie the political right to domestic extremism. Grassley said he agreed that the violence at the Capitol on January 6th was a “desecration” that “disgraced our country,” and he called for those who broke the law that day to be prosecuted. However, he said, to fully address domestic extremism, threats must be looked at across the political spectrum. “A narrow view of these matters would be intellectually dishonest,” he said in response to Durbin’s opening remarks at the hearing, which was on oversight of the FBI. Researchers at the University of Alabama are developing robots that would help police communicate with each other, crime suspects, and the public, reports WBRC. “We are hoping that our human interactive robots will make a safe environment by distancing civilians and officers from dangerous situations,” Dr. Nader Jalili, the head of mechanical engineering at the university’s college of engineering, told The Associated Press . Australia’s top law enforcement officer on Wednesday denied allegations that he raped a girl when he was a teenager. Attorney General Christian Porter said in a news conference in Perth that an anonymous letter accusing a member of Parliament of raping a 16-year-old girl in 1988 is in reference to him, but denied the claim. “The things that are claimed to have happened did not happen,” Porter said, according to The New York Times . ADVERTISEMENT The author of the letter took her own life in 2020. Porter said he had waited until a police investigation concluded to address the claims. Police closed the probe Tuesday and cited lack of evidence, according to the Times.
