WASHINGTON (AP) — After months of political wrangling, House Democrats agreed Tuesday to President Donald Trump’s revamped version of a 25-year-old North American free trade agreement. But they pried some concessions out of the Trump administration before saying they’d go along. Tuesday’s announcement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi probably clears the way for congressional approval of Trump’s U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, though pockets of resistance remain and powerful business lobbies said they still needed to study the details of the latest version. With characteristic brio, the president took to Twitter to declare: “It will be the best and most important trade deal ever made by the USA.’’ More than anything, though, USMCA would just restore certainty to $1.4 billion worth of annual trade between the three countries more than two years after Trump began contentious negotiations on a new regional trade pact. EL SALVADOR - The new U.S. ambassador to El Salvador says the United States is looking forward to reintegrating migrants there from other Central American nations who are seeking asylum in the United States. Ambassador Ronald Johnson, speaking in his first interview since his appointment in July, told VOA there was not a timeline on when El Salvador would start taking in migrants. “I don't have a timeline on it, but I do think that the intent is that it will be implemented in a way that is not burdensome to any of the countries,” Johnson said. The agreement primarily affects immigrants from Honduras and El Salvador, as land … [Read more...] about VOA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: US Ambassador to El Salvador Ronald Johnson Speaks with VOA’s Carla Babb
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday called young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg a “brat” after she expressed concern about the slayings of indigenous Brazilians in the Amazon.Bolsonaro questioned the coverage news media have given Thunberg, 16, who on Sunday tweeted a link to a story about the murder of two indigenous people in Brazil’s Maranhao state. “Greta said that the Indians died because they were defending the Amazon,” Bolsonaro told a group of journalists. “It’s impressive that the press is giving space to a brat like that,” he added, using the Portuguese word word ”pirralha.” Following Bolsonaro’s comments, Thunberg changed the bio on her Twitter profile to say “Pirralha.” Thunberg became a symbol for youth demanding radical change to confront climate change when she sparked global school strikes. Her comments about the deaths of the … [Read more...] about Brazil’s Bolsonaro Calls Climate Activist Greta Thunberg a ‘Brat’
