DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A U.S. permanent resident detained for a year in Iran over spying allegations has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and a $4.2 million fine, his supporters said Tuesday, the latest in a wide crackdown in Iran on those with foreign ties following the country’s landmark nuclear deal with world powers. The sentence for Nizar Zakka, a Lebanese citizen who advocates for internet freedom and whose nonprofit group did work for the U.S. government, comes ahead of Iranian officials attending the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York. It also shows the challenge faced by Western governments and those wanting warmer ties with Iran, where hard-liners in the country’s security forces target dual nationals and others in secret trials. “There’s no regard for any international order, any international agreement or any international state of relations that they care about,” said David Ramadan, a former Virginia state … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Iran imprisons U.S. resident after secret tribunal

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's supreme leader on Thursday slammed the new U.S. sanctions on Tehran signed by President Donald Trump the previous day, and vowed his country would continue its missile program despite international pressure. Washington will "use any excuse to make a fuss" against Iran, said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking at a ceremony marking the formal endorsement of President Hassan Rouhani for his second term in office. "You launch a satellite-carrying missile, they make noise," he said, describing the Iranian launch as a "scientific and technical job that is routine and necessary." "The response to the hostility is to become stronger," Khamenei added and described the U.S. government as "the top aggressor and the most shameless "enemy of Iran. "Some have sharply applied hostility (against Iran), like those who today are in office in the U.S.," Khamenei said, without mentioning Trump or the U.S. president's signing of the legislation on Wednesday. Last Updated Sep 22, 2017 10:54 AM EDT TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Friday unveiled its latest ballistic missile capable of reaching much of the Middle East, including Israel, while the country's president vowed that Tehran would press ahead with its missile program in defiance of U.S. demands to the contrary. The unveiling came during a military parade in Tehran that commemorated the 1980s Iraq-Iran war.The move was a direct challenge to President Donald Trump, who in August signed a bill imposing mandatory penalties on those involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.Though Iran has long boasted of having missiles in the same range in its arsenal, it was the first time that the Khoramshahr, with a range of 1,250 miles was displayed in public. In February, Iran test-fired the same medium-range type of missile, prompting Mr. Trump to say that the United States is "putting Iran on notice."Mr. Trump has vowed repeatedly to take a … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Iran unveils latest ballistic missile in show of defiance to U.S.
