Bombshell, the star-studded new movie about Roger Ailes’ downfall, doesn’t let anyone off the hook. Not even Megyn Kelly. Bombshell isn’t necessarily a good film about Fox News, but it’s at least a fitting reflection of the mess wrought by the right-wing network over the past several years. Directed by Jay Roach (Game Change, Trumbo) and premiering this Friday, Bombshell is a heavily abridged retelling of the downfall of Ailes, the conservative media titan and alleged serial sexual harasser, told from the perspective of three women who helped expose his misdeeds: former hosts Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) and Megyn Kelly (uncannily performed by Charlize Theron), and a fictionalized composite junior Fox News staffer played by Margot Robbie. The film is unsparing in its depiction of the network’s culture (publicly misogynistic), its founder and boss (piggish), and the employees who turned a blind eye to his misdeeds (complicit). Fox News Reporters Echo Trump Talking Points on Ukraine
President Donald Trump is accustomed to receiving support, flattery, and ass-kissing from Fox News’ conservative opinion hosts. But following Wednesday morning’s release of a transcript showing Trump pushing Ukraine to probe former Vice President Joe Biden, the president also found boosters among the network’s self-described “straight news” anchors and reporters. Instead of focusing on how the transcript confirmed the president prodded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to work with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and U.S. Attorney General William Barr on a Biden probe, a number of Fox’s most visible news reporters fixated more on claims made by the media, House Democrats, and the Bidens. In fact, much of what these reporters focused on echoed a substantial portion of the White House’s talking points on the unfolding scandal—at the expense of focusing on the actual news at hand. Chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge and … [Read more...] about Fox News Reporters Echo Trump Talking Points on Ukraine
Shep, Judge Nap, Tucker and the Fox News Civil War Over Impeachment
As an impeachment inquiry looms over President Donald Trump, some Fox News anchors and right-wing commentators have begun openly insulting one another over the president asking Ukrainian President Zelensky, via a July phone call, to investigate Joe Biden. “It is a crime for the president to solicit aid for his campaign from a foreign government,” Judge Andrew Napolitano, a Fox News senior judicial analyst, said Tuesday on consummate newsman Shepard Smith’s daytime broadcast. That analysis clearly irked a frequent Tucker Carlson guest, Joe diGenova, a right-wing conspiracy theorist, who later that night called Napolitano a “fool” on-air. The next afternoon, Smith looked sternly into the camera and called the insult of a fellow Fox colleague “repugnant.” And, of course, that was followed by diGenova reprising that evening on Carlson’s show for a segment in which the primetime host mocked Smith’s “repugnant” line and … [Read more...] about Shep, Judge Nap, Tucker and the Fox News Civil War Over Impeachment
Tucker Carlson Mocks Fox Colleague Shep Smith for Defending Fox News Analyst
Hours after Fox News anchor Shepard Smith blasted frequent network guest and Trump ally Joe diGenova for calling Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano a “fool” during Tucker Carlson’s show, Carlson devoted a Wednesday night segment to mocking Smith’s outrage and defense of their mutual colleague. Inviting diGenova back on his program on Wednesday night, Carlson noted that the Trump-boosting lawyer’s insult of Napolitano caused “quite a firestorm,” reminding viewers that diGenova was responding to Napolitano’s assertion that Trump committed a crime with his phone call to the Ukrainian president. Carlson then took aim at Smith. “Apparently our daytime host who hosted Judge Napolitano was watching last night and was outraged by what you said and, quite ironically, called you partisan,” Carlson exclaimed in a rather jovial manner. The Fox News star went on to air a clip of Smith not-so-subtly calling out Carlson … [Read more...] about Tucker Carlson Mocks Fox Colleague Shep Smith for Defending Fox News Analyst
The Year Shepard Smith Went Rogue at Fox News
In the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency, we witnessed Fox News’ right-wing morning gabfest turn into the most politically influential program in America, its prime-time lineup transform into three hours of non-stop Trump sycophancy, and its own contributors and supposed “hard news” reporters dabble in conspiracy theories that would make Alex Jones proud. And yet, among all that predictable muck—after all, Fox News practically created Trumpism—Fox’s most famous news reporter has stood out as the voice of reliable reporting, fact-checking, and reason. While the rest of his network bends over backward to appease a Republican president who religiously views their programming—and an audience that views “mainstream media” as a personal affront—Shepard Smith and his midday news show, appropriately titled Shepard Smith Reporting, has, in some sense, gone rogue. It’s no surprise, given Shep’s long history of … [Read more...] about The Year Shepard Smith Went Rogue at Fox News
