WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS4) – As tens of thousands gathered in the nation’s capital for the March for Our Lives, survivors from the 1999 Columbine High School massacre were in the crowd advocating for change. The annual march and rally was founded in 2018 following the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It sparked a series of marches across the world focused on pressuring leaders to pass gun control legislation. “It was a very powerful and exalting thing to be a part of,” said Chris Welsh. Look no further than these Bolingbrook animal shelters for a pet available for adoption. Many shelters in Bolingbrook and environs are still working to fulfill adoptions and place pets in their forever home. Over 6 million companion animals are surrendered or taken in each year by adoption facilities nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Shelters often look after other animals in search of a permanent home as well, including pigs, birds and even horses. However, only half of all shelter animals — about 3.2 million — are adopted each year, according to ASPCA data.
