Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Doctor Strange and his multiverse got to linger a little longer atop the weekend box office as Tom Cruise and “Top Gun” wait in the wings. Marvel's “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was the top-earning film of the weekend for the third straight week, bringing in $31.6 million in 4,534 North American theaters, according to studio estimates released Sunday. “Downtown Abbey: A New Era” made a strong opening showing for Focus Features with $16 million from 3,820 theaters, but there has been no real blockbuster competition for “Doctor Strange." "This film has had a pretty wide open marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. “This weekend really is, this is the proverbial calm before the storm.” That storm will come in the form of the long-awaited, and long-delayed, release of “Top Gun: Maverick,” … [Read more...] about ‘Doctor Strange’ remains atop box office as ‘Top Gun’ looms

(CNN) Shortly after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison wrote in The New Yorker: "Unlike any nation in Europe, the United States holds whiteness as the unifying force. Here, for many people, the definition of 'Americanness' is color." Reflecting on efforts -- largely by White men -- to define themselves by sustaining that poisonous definition, Morrison argues that those "who are prepared to abandon their humanity out of fear of black men and women, suggest the true horror of lost status." In Morrison's formulation, fear-driven devotion to racial status is more powerful to many White Americans than even self-interest, shame or any belief in humanity. And it is this reality, that White Americans' anxieties in the face of a changing country have been and continue to be … [Read more...] about Opinion: What a Nobel laureate’s take on Donald Trump reveals about today

Supreme Court Abortion Draft Raises Gears For LGBTQ Rights
0 Politics & Government Since the draft was leaked, same-sex couples have rushed to Eric Patton, an ordained minister, for last-minute marriages. Tennessee Lookout , News Partner Posted Reply By Dulce Torres Guzman, Tennessee Lookout May 17, 2022 Standing at the top of Clingmans Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains, Mario Oranday waited until his partner, Andrew Baumgarten, surveyed the endless tree-lined hills before kneeling down and reaching for the ring he had been carefully carrying. He had asked a nearby couple to film his proposal, and Baumgarten's resounding "Yes" was forever captured on film. In addition, the Department of Safety and Homeland … [Read more...] about Stockard On The Stump: Lee Walking Tightrope On License Plate Readers
