London (CNN Business)Happy Sunday. A version of this story first appeared in CNN Business' Before the Bell newsletter. Not a subscriber? You can sign up right here. There's just one week to go before the United States is scheduled to impose a new round of tariffs on $156 billion of Chinese imports. Meanwhile, both sides are still working toward an elusive "phase one" trade deal that could bring some relief to battered global economies. President Donald Trump said this week that it might be better to wait until after the 2020 US presidential election to strike a deal with China. That assessment came just a week after he said negotiations were in their "final throes." Investors should by now be wise to jawboning from the White House. Yet the consensus is that both countries are in fact moving toward a deal. Beijing offered a concession on Friday that may prove pivotal, pledging to reduce tariffs on US soybeans and pork. "The deal is close. It's probably even closer than … [Read more...] about This is a crucial week for global trade

China’s trade with US sinks in November amid tariff war
BEIJING (AP) — China's trade with the United States sank again in November as negotiators worked on the first stage of a possible deal to end a tariff war. Exports to the United States fell 23% from a year earlier to $35.6 billion, customs data showed Sunday. Imports of American goods were off 2.8% at $11 billion, giving China a surplus with the United States of $24.6 billion. Exports to some other countries including France rose, helping to offset the loss. China’s global exports were off 1.1% from a year earlier at $221.7 billion despite weakening worldwide demand. Imports were up 0.3% at $183 billion, giving China a global surplus of $38.7 billion. Hopes for a settlement to the fight over Beijing’s technology ambitions and trade surplus rose after President Donald Trump’s announcement of a “Phase 1” agreement following talks in October. But there has been no sign of agreement on details nearly two months later. The dispute has disrupted … [Read more...] about China’s trade with US sinks in November amid tariff war
Saunders vs Kiz: What player are Rockies most likely to move at trade deadline?
QUESTION: What player are Rockies most likely to move at trade deadline? Kiz: The Rockies aren’t mathematically eliminated from the National League playoff race. But limping home with a 3-7 record after a tough trip back East, it’s hard to figure how this team should be anything except a seller at the trade deadline, which expires Wednesday. We all know deals are easier discussed than done. But if general manager Jeff Bridich wants to make a move, what Colorado player is most likely to go? Saunders: Kiz, forgive the play on words, but the Rox are stuck in a hard place. This team was built to add pieces at the deadline, not subtract. Not that I thought the Rockies would ever make a blockbuster trade, but I did think they would add a player or two. Two years ago, they brought in reliever Pat Neshek and catcher Jonathan Lucroy, and last summer they added right-hander Seunghwan Oh. Those were solid trades. Now, however, I’m not sure who they can move. RELATED: Kiszla: Can … [Read more...] about Saunders vs Kiz: What player are Rockies most likely to move at trade deadline?
Squash the rumors: Avs star Mikko Rantanen hasn’t returned to the injury list
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar on Monday quieted the rumors that Mikko Rantanen suffered a setback after returning from a 16-game injury absence Saturday when the star right winger had a four-point game in a 7-3 rout over the Chicago Blackhawks. Rantanen didn’t play in the third period Saturday and didn’t practice Monday, even though the team had Sunday off. But Bednar said Rantanen is “expected” to be in the lineup Wednesday when Colorado begins a three-game road trip against the Maple Leafs. The Avs (16-8-2) won’t practice Tuesday before flying to Toronto. “We’re putting him in the best possible situation to succeed, so if he needs a little time before we go to Toronto, then we’ll give it to him,” Bednar said of Rantanen, who sustained an injury to his left leg Oct. 21 at St. Louis. “He played real well the other night, so we’ll just keep talking to him, and seeing how he’s feeling and play it from there.”The … [Read more...] about Squash the rumors: Avs star Mikko Rantanen hasn’t returned to the injury list
Lakers see Nuggets potential as team “we probably see further on in the playoffs”
Kyle Kuzma walked out with a signed Von Miller Broncos jersey slung over one shoulder, Lebron James hollered watching his son’s AAU basketball game streamed to a smartphone, and Rajon Rondo bumped rap music from a wireless speaker. Winning locker room vibes. A clear indicator for what happened Tuesday night as the visiting Lakers maintained their stronghold atop the Western Conference standings with a 105-96 victory against the Nuggets. Coach Michael Malone said in the lead-up to tipoff at Pepsi Center that L.A. is playing at a “whole other level.” Veteran forward Paul Millsap added after the loss: “At this juncture, they’re just a better team than us right now.” However, the Nuggets are less than a quarter into their regular-season slate with time to address untimely scoring lapses and overall inconsistency seen in consecutive losses. The Nuggets (13-5) will face the Lakers (18-3) three more times in 2019-20 with the possibility of a postseason … [Read more...] about Lakers see Nuggets potential as team “we probably see further on in the playoffs”
