Capitol Police officer killed in car attack lies in honor in Capitol Rotunda
William “Billy” Evans, the Capitol Police officer who died in a car attack at a security barricade outside the Capitol this month, laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday. Evans, 41, was killed on April 2 when a man rammed his car into a Senate-side security checkpoint, crashing into him and another Capitol Police officer stationed there. Evans is the second Capitol Police officer to receive the rare honor this year, underscoring the series of tragedies endured by the police force this year starting with the Jan. 6 insurrection. ADVERTISEMENT He is also just the sixth person in U.S. history to lie in honor — the designation for private citizens — in the Capitol Rotunda. Evans served as a Capitol Police officer for 18 years and was a father of two young children. His children, nine-year-old Logan and seven-year-old Abigail, both clutched stuffed animals as pallbearers carried their father’s flag-draped casket up the Capitol’s east center front steps and … [Read more...] about Capitol Police officer killed in car attack lies in honor in Capitol Rotunda
Obama on Daunte Wright: We need to reimagine policing
Former President Obama on Tuesday called for “a full and transparent investigation” into the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright and for the U.S. to “reimagine policing.” “Our hearts are heavy over yet another shooting of a Black man, Daunte Wright, at the hands of police. It’s important to conduct a full and transparent investigation, but this is also a reminder of just how badly we need to reimagine policing and public safety in this country,” Obama said in a statement. “Michelle and I grieve alongside the Wright family for their loss. We empathize with the pain that Black mothers, fathers, and children are feeling after yet another senseless tragedy,” Obama continued. “And we will continue to work with all fair-minded Americans to confront historical inequities and bring about nationwide changes that are so long overdue.” ADVERTISEMENT Our hearts are heavy over yet another shooting of a Black man, Daunte Wright, at the hands of police. Daunte Wright shooting: Minnesota officer meant to draw Taser, not handgun, police say
By MOHAMED IBRAHIM BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — The police officer who fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, as the man struggled with police, the city’s police chief said Monday, as police clashed with protesters for the second night in a row. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting death Sunday of 20-year-old Daunte Wright as “an accidental discharge.” It happened as police were trying to arrest Wright on an outstanding warrant. The shooting sparked protests and unrest in a metropolitan area already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death. “I’ll Tase you! I’ll Tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!” the officer is heard shouting on her body cam footage released at a news conference. She draws her weapon after the man breaks free from police outside his car and gets back behind the wheel. After firing a single shot … [Read more...] about Daunte Wright shooting: Minnesota officer meant to draw Taser, not handgun, police say
Daunte Wright shooting: Protesters face off against police in Minnesota after chief says officer meant to use Taser, not gun
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — Police clashed with protesters for a second night in the Minneapolis suburb where an officer who authorities say apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, fatally shot a Black man during a traffic stop. Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon described Sunday’s shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright as “an accidental discharge.” The shooting sparked protests and unrest in an area already on edge because of the trial of the first of four police officers charged in George Floyd’s death. Hundreds of protesters faced off against police in Brooklyn Center after nightfall Monday, and hours after a dusk-to-dawn curfew was announced by the governor. When the protesters wouldn’t disperse, police began firing gas canisters and flash-bang grenades, sending clouds wafting over the crowd and chasing some protesters away. A long line of police in riot gear, rhythmically pushing their clubs in front of them, began slowly forcing back the remaining crowds. … [Read more...] about Daunte Wright shooting: Protesters face off against police in Minnesota after chief says officer meant to use Taser, not gun
