A Texas county judge shutdown non-essential businesses for two-weeks Thursday as the county reports a surge in new COVID-19 cases, CNN reported. El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said he issued the order based on data that shows the COVID-19 hospitalization rate at 44% as of Thursday evening, according to the report . The order took effect Thursday at midnight. “Since the inception of this pandemic, El Paso County has never seen this level of infections through our community,” he said during a virtual news conference. “Our hospitals, our capacity, our medical professionals are overwhelmed, and if we don’t respond, we will see unprecedented levels of death,” he said. The county also reported 62 new COVID-19 cases bringing the total to 3,602. Of the county’s total cases, three percent involve people under 18 years old; 10 percent are between 18-24; 18 percent are between 25-34; 15 percent are between 35-44; 18 percent are between 45-54; 16 percent are between 55-64; 10 percent are between 65-74; six percent are between 75-84, and four percent are 85 and older. Of the patients who died, three percent were 25 to 34 years old, five percent were 35 to 44, 10 percent were 45-54, 13 percent were 55-64, 17 percent were 65-74, 29 percent were 75-84, and 23 percent were 85 or older. LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Los Angeles County reported 466 new cases of COVID-19 and three additional deaths Sunday, along with a drop in hospitalizations related to the virus. Officials noted that the low number of deaths reflects a lag in weekend reporting. There were 106 people in intensive care, down from 112 on Saturday. The latest numbers come one day after officials reported the county’s daily test positivity rate of 0.9% was the lowest it’s been since the beginning of the pandemic. That number dropped again to 0.7% on Sunday. Fruita Dr. Korrey Klein wanted to make sure the final dose of 8,000 COVID-19 vaccines at his Fruita hospital’s last mass vaccination clinic didn’t go to waste. After some asking around, it went to a visitor at Colorado Canyons Hospital and Medical Center. Eighty percent of patients at this small rural critical-access hospital, about 20 miles from Grand Junction and a service of the nonprofit Family Health West, are on Medicare and Medicaid. Because of COVID, the hospital lost money in 2020, said Klein, who is also the president and CEO of Family Health West. The year before, it made a 4% profit. Already, insurance carriers don’t seem to have an incentive to negotiate better rates with rural hospitals, Klein said, because they have fewer patients. Plus, many don’t even carry their insurance products in rural areas. A Texas county judge issued a 2-week curfew Sunday for all residents as COVID-19 cases have surged and strained hospital capacity, CNN reported. El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego issued the 10pm to 5am curfew due to a 160% increase in case positivity rate since October 1 and a 300% increase in hospitalizations, according to the report . “The purpose of the curfew is to limit mobility in the community,” Samaniego said. “Currently our hospitals are stretched to capacity.” The county reported 517 new cases Sunday, which put the total at over 40,000 confirmed cases, according to County of El Paso websites. There have been 576 reported deaths in the county.
