Republican Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA) was sworn-in Wednesday as a Member of Congress, shrinking the Democrats’ already slim majority. The Congresswoman was sworn-in Wednesday after she won a special election in late March to fill a seat originally won by her late husband, Luke Letlow, who passed away late last year from complications with the Chinese coronavirus. The special election was a 12-way race for the 5th District. Letlow defeated her opponents with a huge margin of 62 percent of the vote. This brings the total number of Republican women in Congress to 31. This win gives the Republicans a huge advantage with 212 seats in the House, catching up to Democrats’ 218 seats which a very slim majority for a controlling party, as reported by Fox News. This brings added pressure to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) as she plans to try and pass parts of her partisan agenda because tied votes in the Houe fail, unlike in the Senate where the Vice President could be called upon … [Read more...] about Julia Letlow Sworn In As Member of Congress After Special Election for Late Husband’s Seat

Jay-Z Endorses Ray McGuire, Working Families Party Endorses Scott Stringer for NYC Mayor
Photo: Bloomberg via Getty Images The endorsements for New York City’s next mayor are starting to rack up as the June 22 Democratic primary closes in. On Tuesday night, three of the most high-profile New Yorkers to weigh in so far made their case for Ray McGuire: In a rollout on NY1 , Jay-Z, Diddy, and Nas all announced that they would back the former Citigroup executive. While McGuire has little name recognition among New Yorkers compared to some of the other candidates already involved in city politics — and one who has never voted in a local election — the approval of this hip-hop triumvirate could help change that. “People come from all over the world, like ‘I got a chance to make it here, if I can make it here I can make it anywhere,’” Jay-Z said in a video endorsement. “And that’s what we’re trying to protect.” The moguls weren’t the only major endorsements to be made public on Tuesday. Residents knocked on doors, hurriedly packed, hoped for the best. In Jamestown, deeper in the mountains of Boulder County, emergency notification calls stirred residents awake at 2:17 a.m. Water and boulders roared down Little Jim Creek. The one-room elementary schoolhouse became a shelter. A man was presumed dead after a single-story yellow house collapsed. The 100-year flood — or was 500 years more like it? — had come. Within hours, both towns were islands. A deluge even the National Weather Service described as bearing biblical proportions had swallowed highways and roads into Jamestown and Lyons, isolating the communities hit hardest by the Colorado floods of 2013. “We have been preparing for this 100-year flood, which is so overdue,” said Mary Huron Hunter, whose 110-year-old house in Lyons is … [Read more...] about Lyons and Jamestown: Two towns, islands in the Colorado floods
