Matt Herges, the former Giants pitcher, didn’t have the best first impression of Gabe Kapler when the two met while working in the Dodgers’ minor-league system in 2015. Then Herges got to know Kapler, and he did a complete 180. “Initially, I had my opinion of him — you feel like you know who someone is by just watching them on TV or playing against them, and I thought he’d just be a big muscle-head,” Herges said of the famously fit Kapler. “Gabe is easy to judge — he’s one of the handsomest guys you’ll ever see, he’s in ridiculous shape, he’s 44 and he still has a six-pack, the tight jeans, he’s got this presence and I think it makes people say, ‘Hold on, what’s with this guy? I’m a little leery.’ “But I was totally wrong. Honestly, he’s a guy you want to be like, and it’s not just a man-crush thing. He’s confident, he’s extremely articulate and above all, … [Read more...] about Polarizing Giants manager Gabe Kapler built a career on overcoming setbacks
In the wake of the most immense barrage of injuries he has witnessed in his three-plus decades in and around the NBA, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr changed how he judged his team: effort level, not wins or losses, would serve as his barometer. By that standard, Golden State made progress in its 105-100 loss to the Celtics on Friday night at Chase Center. After leading scorer D’Angelo Russell left the game for good midway through the third quarter with a sprained right thumb, the Warriors appeared emboldened, using a mish-mashed crew to retake the lead against an Eastern Conference contender. Golden State’s defense, which has been historically bad this season, channeled the stinginess that helped pave the way for the franchise’s recent five-year dynasty. With little more than three minutes left, Warriors two-way-contract player Ky Bowman corralled an offensive rebound and banked in a 6-foot jumper to put Golden State up 93-92. As a sellout crowd stood and roared, the … [Read more...] about Warriors have strong start, but suffer 6th loss in a row
