A recent poll conducted by WPA Intelligence showing Josh Mandel leads the Ohio Republican Senate primary with 38 percent, a 27 point lead over his closest competitor. Josh Mandel is the former Ohio state treasurer and a GOP candidate for U.S. Senate next year. The current Senator, Rob Portman (R-OH), announced that he would retire at the end of his term. The poll was conducted on behalf of the Club for Growth PAC in Ohio from February 1-3. The poll shows Mandel is the front runner for a hypothetical Senate primary, receiving 38 percent of the vote. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) is in second place with just 11 percent of the vote. There are three other likely candidates in the single digits, and 39 percent of the voters still undecided. Early polling is likely based significantly on the name ID. Mandel has previously appeared on a statewide ballot in three different elections. Josh Hawley of Missouri announced Tuesday he will introduce two pieces of legislation this week targeting institutions of higher education, one of which would put universities on the hook financially if its students are unable to repay their student loans. Americans hold nearly $1.5 trillion in outstanding student debt, 10.9% of which is over 90 days delinquent, according to the latest figures available by the New York Fed . Hawley’s proposal would require universities to pay off 50% of the debt incurred by their students facing default. The Missouri senator’s proposal would also prohibit universities from increasing their tuition rates to offset their increased liability. Josh Hawley said during an appearance with “Fox & Friends” Wednesday that he wants Yale University’s federal funding taken away if the school does not treat religious students fairly. “I want to see that they are treating religious students and religious organizations in the same way they treat every other legal organization and every other student,” Hawley, who graduated from Yale Law in 2006, said.
