Clinton initiative’s NYC return includes Andres, Queen Rania
NEW YORK (AP) — World Central Kitchen founder Jose Andres, Jordan’s Queen Rania, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will help relaunch the Clinton Global Initiative in September, when the gathering of international dignitaries returns after six years. The two-day meeting Sept. 19 and 20 in New York is built around a theme of “The Business of How," looking to create partnerships between political, business and philanthropic leaders. “We called the CGI community back together this year because we face an urgent and historic moment,” former President Bill Clinton said in a statement Thursday. “The global community is confronting several existential challenges, including climate change, new threats to our health, worsening economic inequalities, and a global refugee crisis.” The Clinton Foundation's annual gathering was called off in 2016 during former Sen. Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, when questions were raised about the appearance of … [Read more...] about Clinton initiative’s NYC return includes Andres, Queen Rania
He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. But should an 8-year-old be ranked at all?
King Tari Johnson is a 4-foot-8, 91½-pound 8-year-old from Stockton whose mother packs his Looney Tunes lunchbox with ham, salami and cheese sandwiches she cuts into his favorite shapes: stars, footballs and, of course, basketballs. He’s also the future of the NBA. At least, that’s what a couple of websites that track this sort of thing want you to believe. King Tari, with his smooth ballhandling, advanced footwork and deep shooting range, is considered one of the nation’s best third-grade basketball players. If all goes as planned, he could be a household name in, oh, about a decade. As for the near term? King Tari just wants a growth spurt. Of all the potential pitfalls on his path to the NBA, genes might prove his undoing: His father stands 5-10, and his mom is 5-2. “I’m hoping he grows to be at least 6 feet,” said Tari Johnson, King Tari’s dad and personal trainer. “That would definitely help his chances of getting to the league.” King Tari, a giggly, soft-spoken boy who … [Read more...] about He’s a top-ranked basketball prodigy. Tips for saving on your commute amid high inflation
NEW YORK (AP) — Gas prices are falling but still higher than they were a year ago. And inflation has made most everything else more expensive. If you're looking to save money on your commute, here are some tips: IF YOU HAVE A CAR: MAKE A DRIVING STRATEGY AAA recommends avoiding traffic and adjusting your normal route in order to avoid unnecessary driving. When possible, visit “one-stop shops” where you can run multiple errands in the same space and only use premium gas for cars that either recommend it or require it. “Paying for premium gas for a car that is regular is a waste of money and is of no benefit to the vehicle,” according to AAA. MODERATE YOUR SPEED Driving the speed limit can help you save money. Most vehicles reach optimal fuel economy at 50 mph. For every 5 mph you drive over that, it can cost an additional 30 cents per gallon, according to fueleconomy.org. For more tips to save on fuel, the U.S. government offers recommendations such as how to choose a … [Read more...] about Tips for saving on your commute amid high inflation
Francisco Lindor is one of the best players in the league again
As many continue fretting about Francisco Lindor’s batting average — which is also trending upward — the Mets’ indefatigable shortstop has shown up to the ballpark every single day and reclaimed his spot as one of the best all-around players in baseball. Lindor finally gets a break on Thursday, as a Mets’ off day is the only thing that can keep him off the field. Playing virtually without any rest, something that manager Buck Showalter is very fond of reminding people about, Lindor has posted the fourth-most Wins Above Replacement of any position player in the league. With offensive production that’s 32% better than the average player, clockwork defense at the diamond’s most important position and sneaky good base running, Lindor ranks behind the Cardinals’ corner infield duo of Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt for the crown of most valuable player in the league. It will almost certainly not lead to the actual award for Most Valuable Player, but Lindor deserves much more MVP … [Read more...] about Francisco Lindor is one of the best players in the league again
Home prices hit a new record high in the second quarter
(CNN) Despite rising mortgage rates that dampened sales, home prices continued to climb higher in the second quarter, with many more cities seeing double-digit price gains than in the first part of the year. The median single-family existing home price in the second quarter was $413,500 -- the first time this quarterly price has ever risen above $400,000, according to the latest quarterly report from the National Association of Realtors. Home prices for the quarter were up 14.2% from a year ago, slightly slower than the 15.4% year-over-year price increase experienced in the first quarter. A majority, 80%, of US metro areas saw double-digit home price increases last quarter, or 148 out of 185. That's up from 70% of cities in the first quarter. "Home prices have increased at a pace that far exceeds wage gains, especially for low- and middle-income workers," said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist.
