Marsha Stoltz North Jersey Record Published 12:44 PM EST Feb 14, 2019 MAHWAH — The Mahwah Post Office will be moving to a shopping mall on MacArthur Boulevard in August or September. Kurtis Bullard, real estate specialist for the U.S. Postal Service in Greensboro, North Carolina, confirmed Thursday the Mahwah office on East Ramapo Avenue will be moved to the former site of a bank in the shopping mall at 1047 MacArthur Blvd. "late summer or early fall." "We'll know better in the spring," said Bullard. The post office has leased space at the current location east of the Main/Bergen commuter rail line for 53 years, where it has been challenged by a shortage of customer parking and a steep front entrance stairway requiring an accessory ramp. Bullard said there would be sufficient parking space for customers and delivery vehicles at the new location. "We'll be sending out notices when we know more specifically when the move will be," said Bullard. Mahwah Postmaster Jose … [Read more...] about Mahwah NJ post office to move to shopping mall by fall

The shopping mall’s savior starts to eat itself
Stephen Wall’s restaurant chain Pho is the kind of tenant that mall landlords would love to attract. The Vietnamese menu is right on trend, the business is expanding and, even better, it has a track record of success in shopping centers. Yet he thinks that even restaurants like his won’t be the savior of malls suffering from the rise of internet retailing and mobile phone addiction. “Food is not the solution for most landlords. Saturation has occurred because too many restaurants are being put into shopping centers,” said Wall, who founded the U.K. chain with his wife, Jules, in 2005. “Operators are becoming wary.” As competition from the likes of Amazon.com Inc. and Asos Plc intensified, British mall owners looked to food as a way to stay relevant. People would come to the restaurants to eat, buy some clothes in the shops while there, and the extra spending would allow the landlord to boost the rents. A simple, virtuous circle. Instead, food and … [Read more...] about The shopping mall’s savior starts to eat itself
Shopping malls are thriving in Arizona and elsewhere after reinventions
Russ Wiles Arizona Republic Published 7:00 AM EST Nov 19, 2018 The next time you head to a mall — perhaps this weekend — notice how many people aren't actually shopping. They may be eating at a restaurant, going to a movie, working on a laptop, playing happy-hour trivia, practicing yoga in a common area, listening to a band or taking in a cooking class or beauty workshop. Retailing has gotten a black eye lately with store closures by Sears, Toys R Us, Mattress Firm, JCPenney, Macy's and others. Mall vacancies hit a seven-year high in the third quarter amid declining rents. Some 7,000 stores in and outside shopping centers closed in 2017, a sharp increase from the prior year, according to a University of Arizona study released this month. But that doesn't tell the whole story. Many malls, including those in the Phoenix metro area, have remained vibrant — largely by reinventing themselves with more activities, … [Read more...] about Shopping malls are thriving in Arizona and elsewhere after reinventions
Sears is dying just like traditional shopping malls
James Briggs Indianapolis Star Published 6:00 AM EDT Oct 26, 2018 In case filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy wasn't enough of an indignity for Sears, the largest mall owner in America is signaling to investors that malls will be better off without the storied retailer. Simon Property Group Inc. CEO David Simon on Thursday addressed Sears' long-awaited decision to seek bankruptcy protection, a typical precursor to liquidation. The company is closing at least 142 stores. Simon paused to be mournful. "It's a tragic set of events that a company that's been around for so long is in this state of affairs," Simon said during a conference call with analysts. "It wasn't that long ago — 10, 12 years ago — that 300,000 people worked at Sears. So, I mean, I think we should put that in perspective." James Briggs: The housing market is getting worse for everyone James Briggs: The backlash to chain restaurants proves we actually love uniformity James Briggs: … [Read more...] about Sears is dying just like traditional shopping malls
Epidemic of empty stores threatens metro Detroit shopping malls
JC Reindl Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Oct 1, 2018 An epidemic of shuttered storefronts and liquidating department stores continues to plague many of metro Detroit's enclosed shopping malls, threatening the existence of some once-thriving properties that couldn't keep up with retail changes or simply have too much empty space to fill. “We are definitely over-malled, and the malls are too big," said retail analyst and consultant Ken Dalto, who is based in Bingham Farms. This shopping mall shakeout is the result of nonstop growth in Internet shopping and more closures of traditional mall anchor stores such as Macy's, JC Penney, Sears and Carson's. The same phenomenon is happening across the country; some analysts have predicted that up to 25 percent of malls nationwide could close by 2022. Numerous malls have lost one or more … [Read more...] about Epidemic of empty stores threatens metro Detroit shopping malls
