House Republicans deliver a commonsense climate plan
This week, House Republicans, led by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Kevin McCarthy Waters on Chauvin guilty verdict: 'I'm not celebrating, I'm relieved' House rejects GOP resolution to censure Waters READ: McCarthy's resolution censuring Maxine Waters MORE (R-Calif.), rolled out an ambitious climate change platform . It includes more than 30 bills to increase innovation, modernize energy infrastructure and promote natural climate solutions. The move sent a clear message: Republicans are ready to act on climate and they have the right policies to do so. While the platform may come as a surprise to many, given the climate skepticism that dominated the Trump-era Republican Party, the ranks of climate-minded GOP members have grown steadily in recent years. In response to calls from the business community as well as young conservatives, Republicans spearheaded several climate efforts in 2020, introducing the Growing Climate Solutions Act and Trillion Trees Act … [Read more...] about House Republicans deliver a commonsense climate plan

Photo: Angela Weiss/AFP via Getty Images A year ago, New York City became the COVID-19 epicenter of the world. According to new research by city health officials, nearly a quarter of adult New Yorkers were infected during last spring’s catastrophic wave. Researchers at the Department of Health and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health looked at antibody-testing data for more than 45,000 city residents last year. In the new study, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases , they found the toll of infection was worse among Black and Hispanic residents, who were twice as likely as white New Yorkers to have antibodies for COVID-19. (The presence of antibodies serves as evidence of past infection.) “Given disparities in infection risk, effective interventions for at-risk groups are needed during ongoing transmission,” the study’s authors concluded. … [Read more...] about 1 in 4 New Yorkers Were Infected in First Surge of Virus, Study Finds
UK Facing Massive Tax Hikes Following COVID Spending Spree, Warns Think Tank, As Unemployment Rises
The British government may need to increase taxes by over £40 billion per year in order to prevent the debt accrued during the China virus lockdowns from “spiralling upwards”, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) warned in a report. The think tank’s report suggested that a decrease in tax revenue combined with record peacetime spending will force the government to either decrease spending — an unlikely proposition — or increase taxes, in a move that would fly in the face of the 2019 Conservative Party manifesto. The IFS forecast that the deficit will reach £350 billion this year, representing 17 per cent of British GDP and more than six times initially projected in the March budget. Tax Rises or Cuts? Merkel Successor Named… Again! Pro-Lockdown Armin Laschet to Lead Germany’s Governing Party
Germany’s ruling CDU is having a second shake at replacing longtime chancellor and de facto leader of Europe Angela Merkel, with state president and party chairman Armin Laschet emerging victorious from the months-long power struggle on Tuesday. Armin Laschet, the President of Germany’s most populous federal state North-Rhine Westphalia, and who became the chairman of the national Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in January, was selected on Tuesday to lead the nation’s largest party into the forthcoming elections. The centre-right leader is a former long-serving member of the European Parliament. If Laschet is able to steer the CDU to victory, he will replace Angela Merkel as chancellor of the European Union’s largest economy, but will get no taste of power beforehand. Veteran leader Merkel — who has governed Germany since 2005 — has decided to keep the top job until the election itself, despite the fact she is no longer the leader of her dominant CDU party.
