Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 Traffic came to a standstill Saturday morning along Market Street in San Francisco, where thousands of people packed the thoroughfare to march and shout for abortion rights, determined to show they weren’t going to accept the U.S. Supreme Court’s recently leaked draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade without a fight. The demonstration was the largest women’s rights-focused march in San Francisco this year, drawing an estimated 10,000 people, said Sophia Andary, co-chair and director of leadership at Women’s March San Francisco, which co-sponsored the event. Participants came from across the Bay Area and were united in their desire to shape the national conversation around reproductive health care and related issues. The right to have an abortion “shouldn’t even be any form of law in the government,” Andary told The Chronicle. “This is about women’s autonomy and (people’s) right to … [Read more...] about Pro-choice marchers throng S.F.’s Market Street, demand abortion protections

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said the motive of the shooting was a grievance between the shooter, identified as a Chinese immigrant and U.S. citizen, and the Taiwanese community. China claims Taiwan is a part of its national territory and has not ruled out force to bring the island under its rule. The suspect was identified as David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — She has four limbs, expressive eyes and likes to stroll through greenery in New York City. Happy, by species, is an Asian elephant. But can she also be considered a person? That question was before New York's highest court Wednesday in a closely watched case over whether a basic human right can be extended to an animal. The advocates at the Nonhuman Rights Project say yes: Happy is an autonomous, cognitively complex elephant worthy of the right reserved in law for “a person.” The Bronx Zoo, where Happy resides, says no: Through an attorney, the zoo argues Happy is neither illegally imprisoned nor a person, but a well-cared-for elephant “respected as the magnificent creature she is.” Happy has lived at the Bronx Zoo for 45 years. The state Court of Appeals heard arguments over whether she should be released through a habeas corpus proceeding, which is a way for … [Read more...] about Happy is an Asian elephant. Gunman targets Taiwanese faith with long pro-democracy link
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 LOS ANGELES (AP) — The recent deadly shooting at Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church in California didn’t just violate a sacred space. Taiwanese Americans across the country say it ripped through their cultural bastion. It is where the congregation in Laguna Woods worshipped. But it was also where their native language and support for a democratic Taiwan thrived. Sunday's mass shooting by man officials say was motivated by political hate of Taiwan has spotlighted the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan's close connections to the nation's democracy movement. Jerry Chen, a church member who dialed 911 after fleeing the gunman, calls himself a “proud Presbyterian” and says the congregation, while avoiding politics in church, likes to talk about what is going on in Taiwan. “We care deeply because we grew up in Taiwan,” he said. Chen, 72, has been a congregant since … [Read more...] about Gunman targets Taiwanese faith with long pro-democracy link
