(Reuters) - Former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle is seeking release from a Colorado federal prison, saying his guilty plea in a child pornography case was based on an illegal conspiracy charge and should be thrown out. Jared Fogle is led from federal court in Indianapolis, Indiana August 19, 2015. REUTERS/Susan Guyett/File Photo Fogle, 40, this week sought a writ of habeas corpus from the federal court in Denver. He is serving a 15-year, eight-month sentence in nearby Littleton, following a 2015 guilty plea to distributing child pornography and traveling for paid sex with girls. Fogle said his plea was unlawful because it included a “charge of conspiracy” not covered by the text of a federal law concerning sexual misconduct involving minors. Fogle said he would not have pleaded guilty but for the improper charge and said his imprisonment violates his due process rights under the U.S. Constitution. Question: Should Jared Bednar be the NHL’s coach of the year? Kiz: I’m delighted to say I was wrong about Jared Bednar. A year ago at this time, I believed Bednar was over his head as coach of an NHL team and destined to fail. So call me a knucklehead and, more important, let me offer general manager Joe Sakic applause for keeping the faith in Bednar. Instead of asking if he should be fired, I now wonder: Does Bednar deserve to be named the league’s coach of the year? Chambers: I’m convinced Bednar will be a finalist for the Jack Adams Award, and if the Avs make the playoffs I suspect he’ll win it. His main competitor is Vegas’ Gerard Gallant, who has led the expansion Golden Knights to playoffs in their inaugural season. But I think Vegas’ shocking success says more about the work of general manager George McPhee and his staff for putting the pieces together in the first place. Kiz: Hey, my friend, you’re the one who’s around the … [Read more...] about Kiszla vs. Chambers: Should Avalanche’s Jared Bednar be the NHL’s coach of the year?
A pair of House Democrats want the White House to release the results of an internal probe into loans received by Jared Kushner’s family real estate firm. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) sent a letter to White Counsel Don McGahn on Tuesday requesting he provide documents concerning the more than $500 million in loans made last year to Kushner Cos. from Citigroup and Apollo Global Management. The loans were made around the time that Kushner met with executives from the two companies. While the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Kushner’s attorney said his client was cleared by the counsel at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Dept. of Buildings probes Kushner construction paperwork Kushner’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told the Daily News that he confirmed “the White House counsel concluded there were no issues involving Jared.” Kushner stepped away from the family … [Read more...] about House Dems call on White House to release results of probe into $500M loans Jared Kushner’s company received
White House officials have been looking into whether $500 million in loans that went to Trump administration senior adviser Jared Kushner's family real estate company may have spurred ethics or criminal law violations, according to the head of the federal government's ethics agency. David J. Apol, acting director of the Office of Government Ethics, said in a letter sent late last week to Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi that the White House Counsel's office told him that officials were probing the loans to Kushner Cos. and whether "additional procedures are necessary to avoid violations in the future." Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat, had asked Apol on March 1 about a New York Times report in February that Kushner Cos. accepted $184 million in loans from Apollo Global Management and $325 million from Citigroup last year over a span of several months after Kushner met with officials from the two firms. As President Donald Trump's son-in-law and key adviser, Kushner plays an influential … [Read more...] about Kushner lawyer: WH counsel has concluded no issues involving Jared amid loan probe
