California sues over Trump’s abortion-funding restrictions
SACRAMENTO — California sued the Trump administration Monday over new restrictions on federal funding for organizations that perform abortions or consult with women on how to obtain them. The administration adopted a rule last month banning doctors who refer patients to abortion providers from receiving money through a family planning program known as Title X. The rule also requires clinics that perform abortions to do so in a separate building from where they conduct the rest of their services. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wrote in its rule that the changes were necessary to eliminate the possibility that Title X funding could be used for abortion services, which is prohibited by federal law. But critics have denounced the regulations as an attack on Planned Parenthood, the largest recipient of Title X funding nationwide, and as an effort to shift government money to faith-based family planning organizations. State Attorney General Xavier announced the … [Read more...] about California sues over Trump’s abortion-funding restrictions
How uneven economic growth feeds political turmoil
(CNN)When it comes to economic innovation, the rich are getting richer -- and that's generating increasing social frustration and political turmoil for the winners and losers alike as the digital revolution rolls through the American economy. This narrowing distribution of America's most cutting edge, research-intensive industries -- including pharmaceuticals, software, aerospace, data processing, and computer and communications manufacturing -- has … [Read more...] about How uneven economic growth feeds political turmoil

Enthusiastic housing advocates and business leaders also joined the governor for the outdoor bill-signing ceremony in a pocket park at Hunters View, a new mixed-income housing development on the hills of Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco. “This is the biggest bill-signing I’ve ever seen, and it’s because it deals with something as basic as shelter,” the governor said. “It was a big challenge, and we’ve risen to it this year.” Back to Gallery Brown signs housing bills: ‘It was a big challenge, and... Soccer newsletter: Racism remains an issue for the sport
Hello and welcome to another edition of the L.A. Times soccer newsletter. I’m Kevin Baxter, the Times’ soccer writer. We start with a subject that really shouldn’t be an issue in modern society, much less modern soccer. Yet racism remains as implacable as a morning sunrise. No country is completely immune but in few places is racism and anti-Semitism as virulent and prevalent as it currently is in Italy. In the first month of the season, Milan’s Romelu Lukaku was targeted for verbal abuse by fans in Cagliari, a match in Parma was suspended when racist chants were heard coming from the crowd and a TV commentator said of Lukaku “the only way to [stop] him is maybe give him 10 bananas.”Even journalists, who should know better, got into the act with the tabloid newspaper Corriere dello Sport headlining its preview of last Friday’s Milan- Roma game “Black Friday,” placing the words between a picture of Lukaku and Roma’s Chris … [Read more...] about Soccer newsletter: Racism remains an issue for the sport
