ENTERTAINMENT 01/02/2019 05:35 pm ET "The Good Place" star tweeted that she'd be turning her body-positivity Instagram account "I Weigh" into a company. By Jenna Amatulli Jameela Jamil is turning her popular body-positivity-focused Instagram account, @i_weigh, into a company. “The Good Place” actress made her announcement Wednesday, tweeting that one of her company’s main goals is “to work towards a policy change that means this way of talking about people’s bodies is considered hate speech.” “Fat-phobia is real, it is pervasive and prevalent and is damaging the mental health of millions,” she wrote. Her announcement came in the form of a quote-tweet responding to a fan who alerted her to a tabloid magazine’s body-shaming photographs. I’m turning “I Weigh” into a company, and one of our main goals is to work towards a policy change that means this way of talking about people’s bodies is … [Read more...] about Jameela Jamil Announces Company Launch To Change How People Talk About Bodies

Culture There isn’t a weak link in The Good Place—Mike Shur’s perfectly cast sitcom about the afterlife recently nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series—but one of the show’s particular pleasures is watching the face of Jameela Jamil as the British socialite, Tahani Al-Jamil. If her passive-aggressive insults and insufferable name-dropping weren’t so hilarious, we’d happily watch an episode devoted to her silent reactions: imperious complacency, snooty repugnance and extreme bafflement. Her impeccable comic timing implied years of TV credits, but the 32-year-old, London-raised Jamil had never acted before casting director Allison Jones discovered her. (Her experience had been limited to hosting TV and radio shows.) “I lied to Allison and said I had stage experience,” Jamil tells Newsweek. “She didn’t realize I was referring to my 9-year-old self playing Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream … [Read more...] about How ‘Good Place’ Star Jameela Jamil Found Her Inner Tahani, Inspired Erotic Fan Fiction and Started A Movement
WOMEN 12/03/2018 01:00 pm ET “I think it’s a disgusting tool that has been weaponised, predominantly against women," the "Good Place" actress wrote. By Alanna Vagianos Jameela Jamil wants to “put airbrushing in the bin.” “I want it gone. I want it out of here,” the “Good Place” star wrote in a recent essay for BBC. Photoshopping should be illegal because it has been “weaponized” against women to promote damaging beauty standards, the British actress wrote. The tool, which is often used to make women look thinner, younger and lighter-skinned, “is responsible for so many more problems than we realise,” she wrote. It exists to sell a fantasy to the consumer that this ‘perfection’ is indeed possible. If you have yet to achieve this beauty standard, it tells you, you should buy some expensive products immediately, because then you will look like the person in the photo. (But, as I … [Read more...] about Jameela Jamil Thinks Airbrushing Should Be Illegal
Opinion The holiday season is upon us. Food gets increasingly greasier and saltier, there is a reason to eat cake almost every day, and winter layers give us the cover and comfort to just take a break from thinking about our bodies for a minute. Well, they would, if the diet industry and almost all women’s publications didn’t take this prime opportunity to double down on the guilt parade of women daring to eat “unhealthy,” “dirty” food. It’s obscene how blatant the rhetoric is. By winter we have only just escaped the six month onslaught of “Are you beach body ready?” God forbid we could just focus on something else for a minute and enjoy ourselves during this festive time with friends and family. Every public holiday is treated like a Last Supper for women. You best have enjoyed that meal hun, because it’s the last one you will eat until you finally meet society’s narrow standards of beauty, then maybe … [Read more...] about Jameela Jamil: Celebrities Who Flog Diet Products Don’t Care About Their Fans
By Martha Ross | [email protected] | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: November 29, 2018 at 8:21 am | UPDATED: November 29, 2018 at 8:34 am It’s been quite an energizing, inspiring week for Jameela Jamil’s crusade against celebrities like Cardi B, Iggy Azalea and the Kardashians who hawk detox tea, appetite-suppressant lollipops and other dubious diet products to their fans. “The Good Place” star and feminist advocate garnered positive headlines for smartly feuding with the famously confrontational rapper Cardi B, FastCompany and other outlets reported. Jamil adroitly pointed out that the rapper probably doesn’t even use the detox tea she promoted on Instagram over the weekend, even though she claimed it helped her slim down after giving birth four months ago.
