(CNN) New Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has defended the hiring of a former controversial coach who has previously been accused of racism and bullying. The NFL team announced on Thursday that they had hired Chris Doyle, the former University of Iowa strength and conditioning coach, to be the team's director of sports performance. Doyle, who was on the staff at the University of Iowa from 1999-2019, was placed on administrative leave by the school in June after several former Iowa players accused him of racism. Shortly after, the university and Doyle agreed to part ways. However, Meyer, who was hired by the Florida-based team in January after the team fired Doug Marrone, defended the hire, saying that his relationship with Doyle goes back 20 years. Jaguars Split with Controversial Strength Coach Chris Doyle
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars and embattled strength coach Chris Doyle parted ways Friday night, a few hours after a prominent diversity group assailed the team and called the recent hiring “simply unacceptable.” Coach Urban Meyer and general manager Trent Baalke said Doyle resigned and they accepted. “Chris did not want to be a distraction to what we are building in Jacksonville,” Meyer and Baalke said in a statement. “We are responsible for all aspects of our program and, in retrospect, should have given greater consideration to how his appointment may have affected all involved. We wish him the best as he moves forward in his career.” The team initially attributed the statement to Meyer, but added Baalke’s name Saturday and said it was an oversight. The Fritz Pollard Alliance, whose mission is to increase diversity in the NFL, criticized Jacksonville’s leadership, specifically Meyer, and said racist allegations at Iowa should have disqualified Doyle as … [Read more...] about Jaguars Split with Controversial Strength Coach Chris Doyle

Jags’ Urban Meyer Defends Hiring of Controversial Coach
Jaguars coach Urban Meyer finds himself on the defensive after the controversial hiring of a sports performance coach accused of bullying and making racist remarks. Chris Doyle, formerly the strength and conditioning coach at Iowa from 1999 to 2020, was dismissed from that program after multiple allegations of racist language and treating black players differently than other players. Meyer hired Doyle as his sports performance coach, one of 28 people hired as the long-time college coach filled out his first NFL coaching staff. Meyer, however, feels good about the hire based on his background study of Doyle and the allegations against him. Meyer said : I vet everyone on our staff and, like I said, the relationship goes back close to 20 years and a lot of hard questions asked, a lot of vetting involved with all our staff. We did a very good job vetting that one. I met with our staff, and I’m going to be very transparent with all the players like I am with everything. … [Read more...] about Jags’ Urban Meyer Defends Hiring of Controversial Coach
