New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says Amazon “threw away” their opportunity in his city. The retail giant announced Thursday that it was dropping their plans to build a new headquarters in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens. Despite promising to bring 25,000 new jobs to the area, the company faced fierce local opposition over the tax incentives it was offered, as well as the effects the massive new headquarters could have on existing residents. In a statement, Amazon said it was disappointed in the outcome. But the company thanked de Blasio and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who they said “enthusiastically and graciously invited us to build in New York City and supported us during the process.” In his own statement, de Blasio was somewhat less gracious. “You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, … [Read more...] about Read Mayor Bill de Blasio’s statement on Amazon dropping their New York City headquarter plans

A Marc Chagall painting, "Othello and Desdemona," was stolen from a Manhattan couple's home nearly 30 years ago. (FBI) The FBI has recovered a valuable Marc Chagall painting that was swiped from a New York City apartment nearly 30 years ago. The critically-acclaimed artist’s “Othello and Desdemona” had been stashed for years in a Maryland attic, the FBI said Thursday. According to the FBI, the oil-on-canvas work will be returned to the estate of an elderly couple, Ernest and Rose Heller, who were the owners when it was stolen. They have since passed away. The Hellers returned from a two-month vacation in August 1988 to find their 16th-floor Manhattan East Side apartment had been looted of more than $750,000 in art and jewels, The Associated Press reported at the time. The stolen works included a Renoir and the Chagall, which they purchased in the 1920s, according to the report. Chagall painted it in 1911 in Paris.
