WASHINGTON - The Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan – seemingly pushed to the brink last year following unrelenting pressure from the U.S. and Afghan militaries, and by multiple Taliban offenses – appears to have recovered and may soon look to strike further afield, according to U.S. military and intelligence officials. The turnaround for IS-Khorasan, as the group’s Afghan affiliate is known, contrasts with its waning fortunes just over a year ago, when U.S. officials estimated it had lost “up to half its force” while suffering a string of defeats in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces. Stripped of its key territories, U.S. intelligence estimates at the time suggested IS-Khorasan was down to as few as 1,000 fighters. So too, there were growing questions about its offensive capabilities. Nigerian Police Arrest Barber for Offering ‘Anti-Islam’ Hairstyle
Police arrested a barber in Nigeria’s majority-Muslim Kano state for allegedly cutting his clients’ hair in styles deemed offensive to the Islamic faith, Nigeria’s Punch newspaper reported Monday.Local senator Abba Moro demanded the barber’s release from police detention on Sunday, explaining that he was arrested on January 15 and again on January 27 “by a group of Muslims over claims that the hairstyle he designed on two of his customers was insulting to Islam and the Holy [Islamic] Prophet Mohammed.” The barber, named Elijah Ode, is “currently being tried in Gyadi-Gyadi Magistrate’s Court sitting in Kano State,” according to Moro. The senator said Ode has “been denied bail” despite intervention on his behalf by two Nigerian governors from his native Benue state and Kano state, where his business is based. Moro argued the barber’s arrest and continued detention is unconstitutional. “None of my … [Read more...] about Nigerian Police Arrest Barber for Offering ‘Anti-Islam’ Hairstyle
Five More Arrested over Death Threats to Islam-Critical Teen
French police have arrested five people aged 18 to 29 regarding death threats sent to a French teen who criticised Islam on social media last November. The five individuals were taken into custody on Tuesday in relation to an investigation into the very large number of death threats received by teenager ‘Mila’ after criticising Islam in a video on TikTok. According to a report from broadcaster France Bleu, the arrests took place in several areas of France including Loire-Atlantique, Moselle, Calvados, Marne, and Hauts-de-Seine. Those arrested will likely face charges of death threats and cyber-harassment. The November video was the latest released by the French teen since her video in January of 2020 led to a torrent of abuse and threats online. Both she and her family subsequently required police protection, and the teen was also forced to leave her school. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on Tuesday that a total of 13 people had been arrested since the … [Read more...] about Five More Arrested over Death Threats to Islam-Critical Teen
Nolte: WaPo Mocks NFL Legend Schottenheimer, Admires Islamic State Terrorist
Marty Schottenheimer, one of the NFL’s winningest (is that a real word?) coaches, died Monday and the far-left Washington Post immediately mocked the football legend with this headline : “Marty Schottenheimer, NFL coach whose teams wilted in the postseason, dies at 77.” Compare that to the Post headline for Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi just a couple years ago: “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at the helm of Islamic State, dies at 48.” See how this works… One’s an idiot and loser, the other is a scholar and leader. This is no accident. What was especially funny about the Post’s al-Baghdadi headline is that it originally read , “Islamic State’s terrorist-in-chief.” But someone must have complained, so the truth was changed to a lie about “austere scholar.” After facing a ton of ridicule over the “austere religious scholar” headline, the Post went with “Extremist leader of Islamic State dies at 48,” which is still a whole lot nicer … [Read more...] about Nolte: WaPo Mocks NFL Legend Schottenheimer, Admires Islamic State Terrorist
Former Belgian Pro-Sharia Islam Party Candidate Sentenced over Death Threats
A former municipal elections candidate in Belgium who stood for the pro-sharia Islam party has been sentenced after a court found him guilty of making death threats. Philippe Latteur had dropped out of the 2018 race in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert because he could not acquire enough signatures to get on the ballot. Several other candidates had reported Latteur had threatened them, and police charged him with writing threats, cyber-harassment, and carrying a prohibited weapon. On Monday, the Brussels Criminal Court handed down a judgement of 240 hours of community service, a 4,000 euro fine, and a ten-year ban on political activity, broadcaster RTBF reports . Should the 54-year-old fail to complete his community service, he could be imprisoned for one year.
