If you're planning to buy a new iPhone 6 when it comes out this Friday, you'd be wise to take a close look at your calling plan. Picking the right carrier and payment option can save you hundreds of dollars a year, according to an analysis of plan options for the four biggest carriers, AT&T ( T), T-Mobile (TMUS), Sprint and Verizon (VZ). WalletHub analyzed the two-year cost of buying and operating an iPhone 6, with 16 GB of storage capacity, on each of the four major carriers' plans. In all, the site made 12 comparisons among the four carriers: the cost when buying the phone outright; buying it with an installment plan; and buying it at a discount with a two-year service agreement. To make apples-to-apples comparisons, WalletHub assumed that each plan would provide at least 2 gigabytes of data and unlimited phone calls and texting. However, it did not account for the cost of options, such as phone-tracking services, which vary from carrier to carrier. (It also "discounted" the … [Read more...] about How to save $1,186 on an iPhone 6 contract

LOS ANGELES — For the first time since 2014, when Apple launched the iPhone 6, a new, major redesign is expected for Apple’s flagship product. If analysts are correct, the new, top of the line model could look and act quite differently, and have a hefty price-tag of upwards of $1,000.Apple is also expected to offer minor upgrades to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, while the bulk of the changes are coming to what's been called iPhone Pro. (That's the one which could sell for over $1,000.)Apple will debut a lineup the new iPhones at its new corporate campus Tuesday, but why wait for commentary? We're ready now. — Goodbye, home button. The little round piece of glass at the bottom of the iPhone screen we’ve known and lived with for 10 years as our navigational tool could be replaced by something virtual and non-physical. This would enable Apple to make room for a bigger, edge-to-edge, bezel-less screen, like the new Samsung Galaxy S8 … [Read more...] about The iPhone 8 rumors — and what we think of them
Corrections & Clarifications: Augmented reality apps from Apple's new iOS mobile operating system work with the iPhone SE.SAN FRANCISCO — If you’re like many USA TODAY readers, you’ve probably been asking this question: so many iPhones, which one is for me?There's the $999 iPhone X, the $699 iPhone 8 and $799 8-Plus. But also you can downscale to last year's, now cheaper model, the iPhone 7, (now $549) or 7Plus ($669) — and others.Or you can hold onto your old model and just make do until it's really unusable. If you're thinking of an older model, remember that Apple only keeps certain models current for a set period of time, and then sunsets them, as is the case with the iPhone 5 and 5C, which won’t accept downloads of iOS 11, the latest mobile operating system upgrade, coming on September 19th.So if you do want to reach back in time and save money by buying an older phone like the 6S, know that eventually, perhaps in two years, Apple will sunset … [Read more...] about Skip iPhone X and 8. Q. I’m heading to Israel for two years. Any ideas about where to buy an unlocked iPhone for below list price?A. Smartphones can seem the equivalent of pocket-sized laptops, but they don’t offer the same opportunities for haggling and bargain hunting. A phone’s list price tends to be the price you pay — either upfront, on an installment plan or in the form of higher service fees on the two-year contract required to get the device at a lower upfront cost — until that model gets replaced by a newer version. That’s certainly the case with iPhones. Unlike MacBooks and iPads, you can’t expect to see them sold at a discount at Apple’s deals site. The Cupertino, Calif., company has occasionally been spotted unloading refurbished iPhones at an eBay storefront, but you can’t count on that either.Individual wireless carriers will often offer refurbished iPhones for less. But then you also owe at least a month of service, assuming a … [Read more...] about Discounted iPhone the unicorn of smartphones
It happens every September like clockwork. Apple unveils a new smartphone, marking the unofficial start of the fall gadget season, and the official start of people everyone wanting the newest hottest handset. Before you fork over fistfuls of hard earned cash for the next new thing — here’s how to make bank on what you already have lying around:Apple’s new iPhone trade-up program offers store gift cards for iPhone 4’s or newer models. Apple’s flat rates are more static than other trade-in options, which means you won’t likely see them shift much from day to day or week to week. However, the current prices for the iPhone 6 and later are some of the best around, with Apple offering as much as a $250 gift card for an iPhone 6 Plus in great condition. That’s less money than some of the other services, as you’ll read here in a second, but again, many other prices will drop dramatically over the next few days. LOS ANGELES — The iPhone X is one of the must-have tech gadgets of the year, and even with a starting price of $999, the device is expected to sell out immediately when Apple lets shoppers start ordering the phone Friday at 3:01 a.m. ET.What to do? The phone will be in stores on November 3, but tech analysts say Apple has supply constraints that will make it harder than usual to get hold of the newest iPhone.
