When I moved to New York, I had bought this book called “The African-American Century” [by Cornel West and Henry Louis Gates]. It chronicles monumental figures throughout time. She had a chapter, and that was when I learned why she was such a historical figure and significant individual. I did not know that she had run for president. I’m talking, we’re standing maybe right on the heels of an Obama campaign bid. And so I was like, “There was a Black woman who ran for president?
