INDIANAPOLIS — A Valparaiso attorney filed paperwork Tuesday to officially seek the Democratic nomination for Indiana secretary of state.Jim Harper already has spent much of this year campaigning for the office, visiting 40 of Indiana's 92 counties and meeting many of the delegates whose support he'll need to win the nomination at the party's June 16 state convention.So far, Harper is unopposed by any fellow Democrats. CROWN POINT — Voters will be choosing a new Lake County clerk and deciding whether to retain the county auditor and treasurerFormer Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Arredondo, of Crown Point, is one of three Democrats running for Clerk of the Circuit Court, which is the record-keeper for 17 Lake Circuit and Superior Court judges, has 80 full-time and 80 part-time employees and a 2018 budget of $2.6 million.Arredondo served as a Lake Superior Court, County Division judge for four years and as Lake Circuit Court judge from 1980 to 2010, when he retired from the bench.Arredondo was the Democratic candidate for Indiana Attorney General in 2016. People in the courtroom gasped Thursday as they watched home surveillance video of Judy Cottrell tossing, hitting and shaking the child she was hired to care for."We trusted Judy, and she abused that trust," Megan Gilbert said.Judy Cottrell, 57, of Lake Village, was sentenced Thursday in Lake Superior Court to three years — one year in jail, one in Lake County Community Corrections and the remainder on probation, a judge decided.Cottrell pleaded guilty in February to battery against a disabled person, a Level 5 felony, court records show, for incidents that occurred when she was working as a home health care nurse for Gilbert's then-8-year-old son.He has a rare genetic disorder called Cornelia de Lange syndrome, and he has the mind and body of a 2-year-old, his mother said.The boy, now 9, bounced on Gilbert's lap before the hearing, playing with a spinning toy that lit up.
