(CNN) When your phone goes off in the middle of the night, it isn't usually good news. At best, it signals a call into action, albeit with a foggy head and a scrambled mind. At worst, the incessant ringing or buzzing represents news of a dreadful event, or an impending one. As the British rower Jasmine Harrison discovered, being woken up at 4 a.m. -- when you're all alone in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean -- is a harbinger of all of the above. "Oh my God," Harrison declared on a video recording that she made of the incident, "I'm actually shaking. This is as scary as anything!" Read More She was roughly halfway through a daring solo adventure -- rowing across the Atlantic -- when she realized that she was teetering on the brink of total calamity. Her tiny 550-pound (249 kilograms) rowing boat was on a collision course with a drilling ship, which could easily have swatted her asunder without ever knowing that she was there. Report: Chinese State Hackers Target Indian Coronavirus Vaccine Makers
Internet security firm Cyfirma reported Monday that hackers linked to the Chinese government are attacking the computer systems of two major Indian pharmaceutical companies involved in producing vaccines for the Wuhan coronavirus. Cyfirma, based in Singapore and Tokyo, told Reuters on Monday the attacks are coming from a well-known hacker group designated Advanced Persistent Threat 10 (APT10) and commonly known as “Stone Panda.” APT10 has been active since 2009, generally targeting U.S. and allied defense, healthcare, and aerospace computer systems. Its attacks are mostly designed to steal information or sabotage foreign companies, giving Chinese commercial entities a competitive advantage. In this case, APT10 is apparently trying to steal coronavirus vaccine data to help China promote its own questionable vaccine products. The targets of the hacking campaign Cyfirma identified are Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute of India (SII), with the … [Read more...] about Report: Chinese State Hackers Target Indian Coronavirus Vaccine Makers
Green New Deal’s 3 billion ton problem: sourcing technology metals
President Joe Biden’s climate plan faces a policy challenge that cuts across clean energy, technology and national security: critical minerals. This is also an area of policy which may find bipartisan convergence as critical metal supply was an area of interest to the Trump-Pompeo state department when they launched the Energy Resource Governance Initiative in 2019. In one of his valedictory pieces of prose , Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, alongside erstwhile Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Francis Fannon, made a plea for continuing this policy. Indeed, as a bipartisan gesture that ironically also aligns with the Green New Deal, the Biden administration should find ways to continue this effort. Ensuring sustainably sourced mineral supply for the United States through mineral exploration relations with key allies should be a priority for not only the State department but also the Departments of Energy and Interior. The World Bank estimates that meeting targets of … [Read more...] about Green New Deal’s 3 billion ton problem: sourcing technology metals
Biden should use private partnerships to save US lands
Conserving land is an essential element of any effort to battle climate change, a fact highlighted by the 30x30 plan supported by President Biden Joe Biden Biden offers support to union organizing efforts Senate Democrats nix 'Plan B' on minimum wage hike Kavanaugh dismays conservatives by dodging pro-Trump election lawsuits MORE . Fulfilling a campaign pledge, one of Biden’s first actions as president was to sign an executive order that established the goal of conserving a third of America’s land and ocean waters by 2030. Meeting that goal will not be easy, but it can be achieved if we harness both private and government resources and ensure more Americans can participate in land conservation efforts. The good news is that ocean conservation is already within reach of this threshold, with 26 percent of U.S. waters already protected . We have significantly more work to do when it comes to land, with only 12 percent conserved. ADVERTISEMENT The … [Read more...] about Biden should use private partnerships to save US lands
