U.S. Park Police to start wearing body cameras
Officers in the U.S. Park Police (USPP) will start wearing body cameras this year, the National Park Service announced Thursday. The agency said in a statement that its new chief Pamela Smith will start a body camera program for the park police in San Francisco within 90 days and that the program will be “implemented across the country” by the end of the year. Smith, who starts as USPP chief on Sunday, will be the first African American woman to hold its top job, the agency said in a statement. For better or worse: Which way will US-Saudi relations go under Biden?

Things changed with the 1973 Yom Kippur War and the Arab oil embargo , which prompted a dramatic price increase. (The architect, Saudi oil minister Ahmed Zaki Yamani, died this week .) We quickly learned that the oil part of the deal meant “oil at reasonable prices,” and there was little agreement on the definition of … [Read more...] about For better or worse: Which way will US-Saudi relations go under Biden?
Lessons from past public health emergencies could have saved 2020
The last 11 months could have been so different. Imagine we had clear plans in place for last-mile vaccination, persuasive communications to explain its value and strategies to distribute these life-saving drugs equitably. For me — for all public health emergency response professionals — the tragedy of COVID-19 is that this alternate reality was entirely possible . We have worked enough public health emergencies over the last 20 years to know that the lessons we are learning the hard way now, have been learned and forgotten over and over again. How is it possible, you might ask, that our public health system has forgotten crucial information about managing pandemics? After all, airline accidents kill far fewer people, yet the National Transportation Safety Board is there to learn their lessons. Similar programs exist to lower crime rates , improve education and improve population health . ADVERTISEMENT But unlike many in the … [Read more...] about Lessons from past public health emergencies could have saved 2020
