Everyone’s favorite feel-good reality show Queer Eye returned for its sixth season on New Year’s Eve, this time with the Fab Five making their way to Texas, looking for a fresh batch of deserving candidates to overhaul their lives for the better. One such lucky participant was Terri White, who kicks off the new season when Antoni Porowski, Karamo Brown, Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, and Bobby Berk pay her a visit at her family’s storied honky-tonk Broken Spoke, an Austin institution that has been frequented by the likes of Dolly Parton, Mick Jagger, Willie Nelson, and Clint Eastwood. White is the venue’s resident two-step instructor, teaching weekly classes on how to master the traditional Southern dance, as well as the Cotton-Eyed Joe and Western Swing. “People need to quit bitchin’ at each other and have a good time,” she told the fivesome on the show. The fiery 58-year-old grandmother’s storyline is centered on mending her relationship with her … [Read more...] about Did Netflix’s ‘Queer Eye’ Put a Racist and Homophobic Honky-Tonk Dance Instructor on Its Show?

5 NEW YORK (AP) — When we last saw the cheerleading team from Navarro Community College on Netflix, it was in the final episode of the docuseries “ Cheer. ” They had just won the NCA National Championships in the junior college division and celebrated with a tradition where the champions run into the ocean. Then came the fame. The main cast, including coach Monica Aldama, became overnight celebrities outside of the cheer community, where some of them were already known. They appeared on talk shows including “Ellen,” posed for photo shoots and Aldama was a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars.” Gabi Butler, a sometimes-Navarro student who returns to compete with the squad and was already famous in the cheer world before the series debuted, says they were all surprised by the show's success. “No one really expected the show to be so big, and I think that kind of caught everybody off guard. It was like, ‘Oh wow. We thought only … [Read more...] about Netflix’s ‘Cheer’ returns after team’s major highs and lows
14 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — In a case that exposed Silicon Valley’s culture of hubris and hype, Elizabeth Holmes was convicted Monday of duping investors into believing her startup Theranos had developed a revolutionary medical device that could detect a multitude of diseases and conditions from a few drops of blood. A jury convicted Holmes, who was CEO throughout the company's turbulent 15-year history, on two counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit fraud after seven days of deliberation. The 37-year-old was acquitted on four other counts of fraud and conspiracy that alleged she deceived patients who paid for Theranos blood tests, too. The verdict came after the eight men and four women on the jury spent three months sitting through a complex trial that featured reams of evidence and 32 witness — including Holmes herself. She now faces up to 20 years in prison for … [Read more...] about Former Theranos CEO Holmes convicted of fraud and conspiracy
Let's start with the beard. J.D. Vance didn't used to have one. The Vance who in 2016 achieved incandescent literary fame with his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" was all baby fat and rounded edges. The Vance I'm watching now, from the back of a coffee shop in the depressed steel town of Steubenville, Ohio, has covered up his softer side. In small-format events like this one, addressing a couple dozen primary voters, he spends about 15 minutes attacking corporate and governmental elites for failing the country, then answers questions and mingles for maybe another 45 minutes. Vance, 37, is comfortable in the folksy idiom of GOP campaigning (e.g., "she loved the Lord, she loved the f-word - that's what Mamaw was") but he tends to gloss over his famously traumatic childhood, immortalized on screen in Ron Howard's 2020 film adaptation of his book. In Steubenville, he paces the room with a Big Gulp-sized foam cup in his hand, an Everyman touch that accentuates his new aesthetic. - - - I'm not … [Read more...] about The radicalization of ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ author J.D. Annie Hamilton is not the child of anyone famous. She’s not a profitable influencer, self-made YouTuber, or an overnight TikTok celebrity. Still, Ms. Hamilton has become something of a cult figure for a young generation of actors and people who love talented messes. On Twitter, Instagram and Substack, the 29-year-old New Yorker has been creating a mesmerizing, mirthful, at times harrowing, narrative of her bicoastal life. She posts self-taped auditions for roles she failed to get; glamour shots paired with photos of her shoe-mangled feet; and tales of rejection and loneliness and cigarettes. Ms. Hamilton can feel like a throwback to one of Warhol’s Factory Girls, balanced between self-importance and self-destruction in a Manhattan of yellow cabs, pay phones, tabloid crime and a rumored portal to dreams coming true. “I had known about Annie Hamilton as a Twitter personality,” said former Interview editor Nick Haramis. “She fascinated me from afar. Then I was at a birthday party in … [Read more...] about Cinderella by Way of Cassavetes

Jerry Harris was the definitive breakout star of Netflix's "Cheer" following its January 2020 debut on Netflix - so much so that he was tapped to interview celebrities on the red carpet at the Oscars the next month, where more than one actor told him that they loved watching him on the docuseries. He picked up endorsement deals, including an ad for Cheerios cereal, and signed with a talent agency. But on Wednesday, as the second season of "Cheer" arrived on the streaming platform, Harris remained at the Metropolitan Correctional Center of Chicago, where he is awaiting trial on federal child pornography charges. Harris, 22, was arrested in September 2020 following an FBI investigation into allegations he repeatedly solicited sexually explicit photos and videos from boys he knew to be underage. Three months later, Harris was indicted on additional charges, alleging he solicited sex from minors at cheerleading competitions. News reports and legal documents, including a 27-page … [Read more...] about Jerry Harris was the breakout star of ‘Cheer.’ Here’s how season 2 handles his arrest for child pornography.

Jesse Plemons says Benedict Cumberbatch ’s Method acting as the gruff Phil Burbank while shooting “The Power of the Dog” definitely intensified their on-camera dynamic. “It creates a mood,” Plemons tells me from Austin, where he is filming “Love & Death,” HBO Max’s original limited series about Texas housewife Candy Montgomery ( Elizabeth Olsen ), who murdered a fellow churchgoer with an ax in 1980. “It kind of starts creeping in and in between in one way or another,” he says. In the Netflix film, written and directed by Jane Campion and based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name, Cumberbatch plays a wealthy rancher in 1925 Montana who grieves for Bronco Henry, his late mentor and probable lover. His repressed feelings cause him to horrifically bully his brother (Plemons), his sister-in-law, Rose ( Kirsten Dunst ) and her son, Peter ( Kodi Smit-McPhee ). Plemons admits that Cumberbatch unknowingly almost took … [Read more...] about ‘Power of the Dog’ Star Jesse Plemons Reveals the Time Benedict Cumberbatch’s Method Acting ‘Pissed Me Off’

Just Like Fred On Thursday, the Justice Department charged 11 Oath Keepers with seditious conspiracy in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. “Finally!” Stephen Colbert said. “Up until now, the most serious charge any of these guys has gotten is impersonating a Flintstone.” “You know how your mother used to say if your friend jumped off a bridge, would you jump, too?
