(AP) — Florida’s top elections official abruptly resigned Thursday after a newspaper obtained pictures of him in blackface posing as a Hurricane Katrina victim. Secretary of State Michael Ertel, who had been on the job less than three weeks, resigned just hours after he testified about election lawsuits before a state legislative committee. The Tallahassee Democrat obtained pictures taken at a Halloween party 14 years ago that show Ertel dressed in blackface while wearing earrings, a New Orleans Saints bandanna and fake breasts under a purple T-shirt with “Katrina Victim” written on it. Hurricane Michael reached Mexico Beach in Bay County on Wednesday afternoon as a catastrophic Category 4 storm — the strongest hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle on record and the fourth-most powerful storm to ever hit the United States.Only three hurricanes reached the country as a Category 5: Andrew in 1992, Camille in 1969 and an unnamed storm that hit the Florida Keys in 1935 often referred to as "Labor Day."Hurricane Michael reached sustained maximum wind speeds of 155 mph as it hit the state. Make It Right, which was created two years after Hurricane Katrina hit, reportedly paid architect John C. Williams millions of dollars for architectural drawings for more than 100 homes under a program providing Lower 9th Ward residents with sustainable and affordable new houses, according to The Associated Press.
