But when it came to the camera, only Apple and Samsung phones cracked the top 10. Consumer Reports tested phones for both still-image quality and video quality, but noted that there was little difference between all the top-ten phones — in fact, all 10 were rated either very good or excellent overall. 3 Most smartphones today largely look the same. With the exception of the maverick BlackBerry Priv, sporting both a touchscreen and physical keyboard, the vast majority of phones are slabs of metal, plastic and glass, with large displays and the physical home button thrown in for good measure. So hats off to LG for trying something different with the LG G5, the first major brand smartphone to feature modular components, meaning you can clip new batteries, cameras and Hi-Fi adjustors to customise the phone further to your own requirements. Though Google’s Project Ara was the first mainstream manufacturer to promise modular phones, LG is the first to actually deliver it. Last year’s LG G4 was a bit of a let-down in terms of average battery life and the horribly ill-informed decision to coat it in leather, meaning the G5 has a lot of ground to make up to match the excellence of 2014’s G3. 4 As phone manufacturers go, HTC are in a bit of a tight spot. Once upon a time, the Taiwanese company was among the first to produce smartphones running Windows Mobile OS in 2010, and created the first ever handset to ship with Google's Android platform, the HTC Dream in 2008. It swiftly rose to become the third largest phone manufacturer behind Apple and Samsung in 2011, when it held around 10 per cent of the global market share. Then it all went wrong. Poor business decisions, including selling its extremely valuable stake in Beats in 2013 and refusing to invest enough in marketing, left the company struggling to keep up with its behemoth rivals.
