Daniel Day-Lewis sent the internet into a film-bro tizzy Tuesday afternoon when he announced that, at age 60 and after a celebrated four-decade film career, he is retiring from acting. Which is an incredible privilege to announce. There was no reason given for his retirement, with Day-Lewis’ spokesperson, Leslee Dart, simply saying, “Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. ” In that case, the internet (also me) will gladly comment on it in their stead! First came the jokes riffing on his legendary reputation for getting deep in character during film shoots for projects like Lincoln, There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York, and My Left Foot, and then staying in character for the entirety of the shoot. (Including my own attempt: “I will … [Read more...] about Daniel Day-Lewis Is Retiring From Acting. Hollywood Women Don’t Have That Luxury.

Violence threatens to bring Ebola back in Congo
GOMA, Congo - The attack began at midnight, the machete-wielding assailants unidentifiable in the pitch black that engulfed the tented encampment. Their victims were front-line responders to the ongoing Ebola outbreak who had arrived in the remote town of Biakato from across Congo and the world, hoping to cut off the last few chains of the virus's transmission and end an epidemic that has killed more than 2,200 people over the past 16 months. In the week before the attack on Nov. 28, that victory seemed near: Tallies of new cases had dropped below 10, from a high of more than 100 per week earlier this year. But a sudden resurgence of violent incidents has dashed that optimism and cast a pall of fear over the response. More than 500 health workers have had to be moved away from the violence, and the World Health Organization now says there is a risk the outbreak could come roaring back. "We are of course expecting to see new cases that wouldn't have otherwise been transmitted," said … [Read more...] about Violence threatens to bring Ebola back in Congo

Graham hits 10 3s, Hornets spoil Russell’s return 106-91
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — It's only December but Devonte' Graham is making a strong case for the NBA's Most Improved Player. Graham added to his growing resume on Wednesday night, knocking down 10 of 16 3-pointers and finishing with 33 points as the Charlotte Hornets spoiled D'Angelo Russell's return to the court with a 106-91 victory over the Golden State Warriors. He also had nine assists and seven rebounds with only two turnovers. Granted, Graham's effort came against the struggling Warriors (4-19), but Hornets coach James Borrego said the second-year guard deserves to be at the top of the MIP conversation. “He's not just doing it every other game or every third game or fourth game, he's doing this consistently night after night,” Borrego said. “It's not like he wasn't on that scouting report tonight. I guarantee you (Warriors coach) Steve (Kerr) had him at the top of the report, just like he will be on Friday night.” Graham is averaging 20.8 points and … [Read more...] about Graham hits 10 3s, Hornets spoil Russell’s return 106-91
The CW’s New ‘Dynasty’ Can’t Compare to the Wild, Decadent Original
In 1980, America kicked Jimmy Carter to the curb and voted for Ronald Reagan. He was a former movie star, charismatic, and harbored a general disdain for the poor. He embodied the American dream: the idea that you’re better than your circumstances, and that you deserve fast cars, big homes, and overflowing bottles of Champagne. That was the allure of Dynasty, the glitzy prime-time soap opera from Aaron Spelling that bowed just eight days before Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States. It’s also no coincidence that after Reagan left office in 1989, the series was canceled months later—its zeitgeist moment had passed. But now, as the CW prepares to reboot Dynasty for the Trump generation, boasting a show about the so-called 1 percent of the 1 percent, it’s time to remember the importance of the original series and the great heights the new Dynasty will have to climb to reach the continued relevance of its predecessor. Dynasty started off … [Read more...] about The CW’s New ‘Dynasty’ Can’t Compare to the Wild, Decadent Original
