By Peter Marcus , Colorado Politics GOLDEN — The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has 40 years of history behind it, but walking through its sprawling Front Range campus one can’t help but think 40 years into the future. Solar cells that can be spray-painted onto windows or printed at a Home Depot; power grids that can take in a wide portfolio of traditional and renewable energy and adapt to changing environments; homes with appliances that communicate with each other to share power between electric cars, water heaters, appliances and even neighbors; hydrogen cars that can travel 300 miles with only a three-minute charge. Researchers at NREL — a national laboratory that celebrated its 40th birthday on July 5 — have been innovating and contributing to the Colorado and national economy through seven presidential administrations, with the reach of their work only growing each year. But the laboratory’s future is uncertain under President Donald Trump, who has promised to … [Read more...] about National Renewable Energy Laboratory optimistic in face of Trump’s budget cuts

‘The Fight of the Century’: A divided US nation 50 years on
By Steven Poole, CNN Updated 1210 GMT (2010 HKT) March 8, 2021 (CNN) By the time the first bell rang and Joe Frazier came bobbing towards him, Muhammad Ali was already four years into a fight that helped define him as one of the 20th century's most influential figures. Under the lights at Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971, Ali was once again fighting for the world title and, for many fans, boxing's true heavyweight champion had finally returned from exile. Banished as one of the most electrifying and polarizing figures of the late 1960s, Ali had become the face of protest, and the man to unite the anti-war movement with the ongoing struggle for civil rights and racial equality. Seconds out, round one For the "Fight of the Century," everyone who was anyone sat ringside. The Four-Year Swing That Saved America’s Safety Net
John McCain kills the “skinny repeal” of the Affordable Care Act on July 27, 2017. Photo: AP/YouTube There’s been a lot of justified talk about how the Biden COVID-19 stimulus bill that passed the Senate over the weekend represents one of the largest expansions of federal assistance to low-to-moderate-income families since, well, pick your precedent, from a list that includes FDR’s New Deal and LBJ’s Great Society. The bill’s ultimate legacy, of course, will be determined later. Will its many temporary provisions (notably, boosts in the child tax credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit) be made permanent? And what will follow it as the Biden administration’s next act, which will presumably address the broad outlines of the health-care system and anti-poverty programs? But even at this preliminary stage of the 46th presidency, we’re seeing quite the turnaround from the social-policy trajectory of the 45th. Just 1,320 days ago, the Trump-and-congressional-Republican plan to … [Read more...] about The Four-Year Swing That Saved America’s Safety Net

(CNN) Another day, another chorus of hysterical cries from the GOP that the Democrats are trying to cancel something. This week we saw GOP elected officials and Fox News in full conniption mode falsely claiming that Democrats wanted to cancel Dr. Seuss and Mr. Potato Head. The reality, though, is that it's the GOP that is the party of cancel culture. Dean Obeidallah Republican lawmakers have tried to cancel everything from the 81 million people who voted for Joe Biden to now trying even to cancel free pizza for people on line waiting to vote in Georgia. The truth -- as the GOP must know -- is that neither the decision by Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop printing six … [Read more...] about Look at everything the GOP wants to cancel

The International Association for Suicide Prevention and Befrienders Worldwide also provide contact information for crisis centers around the world. (CNN) Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, said in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that her life as a British royal was so isolating and lonely at one point she "didn't want to be alive anymore" -- a stunning admission likely to rock the foundations of the centuries-old institution. In her first public comments since she and her husband Prince Harry announced their plans to step back from senior roles in the British royal family, Meghan described herself as the victim of an image-obsessed Buckingham Palace, which weighed in on everything from how dark her son Archie's skin color would be to how often she went to lunch with friends. The TV special was highly anticipated because Harry and Meghan are now allowed to … [Read more...] about Meghan reveals she ‘didn’t want to be alive anymore’ in bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey
