(CNN) — The fight over abortion moved to the forefront of this fall’s midterm elections on Friday, as Democrats urged voters to view November as their best hope to halt the erosion of reproductive rights set off by the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade and Republicans previewed new national and state-level efforts to limit abortion rights. “This fall, Roe is on the ballot,” President Joe Biden said in a speech from the White House on Friday, hours after the Supreme Court had overturned the landmark ruling. “Personal freedoms are on the ballot. The right to privacy, liberty, equality — they’re all on the ballot.” READ MORE: Detroit Woman Charged After Body Of 3-Year-Old Son Found In Freezer How the tectonic shift set off by the Supreme Court’s decision will play out in November’s elections will take time to gauge. Column: With Roe overturned, will Democrats finally learn that losing parties can’t construct the court?
SACRAMENTO — Elections have consequences. That’s a cliché, but clichés are born of truths. And this is a truth: If a Democrat had been elected president in 2016, we wouldn’t have a right-wing Supreme Court. If Donald Trump hadn’t beaten Hillary Clinton, gun control laws and national abortion rights would not have been quashed by the Supreme Court last week. The Supreme Court today would not have a 6-3 conservative majority. It would be 6-3 moderate-to-liberal. Parts of American life wouldn’t have been turned upside down. Trump named three conservative justices to fill seats that would have been occupied by three liberals or centrists under a Democratic president. On Friday, Trump bragged about that after the court overturned Roe vs. Wade . The former president noted he pledged during the 2016 campaign to nominate anti-Roe justices, and he did. The Ravens’ downfield passing game needs to improve. Could Marquise Brown’s departure actually help Lamar Jackson? | ANALYSIS
The opening was small, about as wide as a kid’s-size hula hoop, which meant the throws had to be perfect. But in the late-morning hours of the Ravens’ final mandatory-minicamp practice earlier this month, as quarterback after quarterback dropped back to pass, the target might as well have been a ring toss carnival game. From about 20 yards away, passes caromed off the target’s exterior, or landed short of the opening, or sailed over, or missed wide. Not until Lamar Jackson finally laced a throw into the net a few minutes into the drill did the thwang of a bull’s-eye ring out over the practice fields in Owings Mills. “Oh, my God, we were, like, four of 1,000 today,” Jackson joked afterward. “I was like, ‘What the hell are we doing?’” As Jackson and the Ravens continue their contract negotiations this summer , off-and-on talks that have invited the same kind of disbelieving commentary, there’s work to be done on the field, too. Jackson is coming off his worst year as a passer … [Read more...] about The Ravens’ downfield passing game needs to improve. Could Marquise Brown’s departure actually help Lamar Jackson? | ANALYSIS
A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw
Roehampton, London (CNN) It's unmistakably a scene from the British summer: across a stretch of green, well-kept courts, tennis players shoot balls over the net as spectators -- some seated, some sprawled on grass banks -- watch on in the lazy afternoon heat. This is Wimbledon -- the third grand slam tournament of the calendar year -- but the venue and the competitors are not quite as most know it. At this tennis club, the crowds are smaller, the cheers quieter, and the courts packed closer together than at the All England Club three miles away. While the Wimbledon main draw may not get underway until next week, for more than 250 players the journey to get there has already begun. The four-day qualification tournament in the London district of Roehampton can be a golden ticket for the Wimbledon main stage -- a place at which some players have dreamed of competing their whole careers. "I haven't actually been to the main set at Wimbledon since my … [Read more...] about A short distance from Wimbledon, players struggle and strive to qualify for the main draw
