YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CALIF. - Two skiers navigated a thin layer of snow with no margin for error down the precipitous shoulder of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park and alternately skied and rappelled back to the valley floor in an unusually daring feat. Jason Torlano, 45, and Zach Milligan, 40, completed the descent in five hours Sunday by carefully carving their way in crusty snow and using ropes to rappel several sections of bare rock known as the "death slabs" beneath the iconic face of Half Dome, the Fresno Bee reported Thursday. "If you fall to your left or right, you're definitely dead," said JT Holmes, a professional free skier and a friend of Torlano. "If you fall down the middle, you have a small chance of not falling to your death — but it's a maybe." Snowboarder Jim Zellers is believed to be the first to descend the 243-meter upper section on the shoulder of the dome in 2000. But no one is known to have attempted the entire 1,463-meter descent from peak to … [Read more...] about 2 Skiers Defy Death in Descent of Yosemite’s Half Dome

One year ago today, Colorado hired Karl Dorrell: The inside story of a courtship that required just one conversation
One year later, the relationship seems preordained. Karl Dorrell has instilled his brand of calm and cool into a Colorado football program that was in dire need of both — a program that had been ditched by its head coach, a program that was forever one win short, that had a fragile roster and lacked momentum and was consumed by uncertainty as the pandemic descended and society lurched to the edge. One year later, the skeptics have been silenced. Unflappable as the Flatirons, Dorrell provided instant stability, kept the roster intact, managed his staff, navigated the local health restrictions, demanded accountability, identified a quarterback, guided the Buffaloes to unexpected success and was named the 2020 Pac-12 Coach of the Year. “He has done everything I thought he would do, and he has been exactly who I thought he was,’’ Colorado athletic director Rick George said recently as he reflected on the process that led to Dorrell being named head coach on Feb. 23, 2020. “We … [Read more...] about One year ago today, Colorado hired Karl Dorrell: The inside story of a courtship that required just one conversation
Estes Park distillery fire: 2 employees injured in possible explosion
A possible explosion and fire on Saturday morning injured two employees of a distillery in Estes Park, a fire rescue official said. The Estes Valley Fire Protection District responded to the incident about 9 a.m. at the Elkins Distilling Company, 1825 N. Lake Ave., said Mike Richardson, public information officer. Two employees were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, Richardson said. One victim was flown to North Colorado Medical Center Western States Burn Center in Greeley, and a second was being transferred there, according to the Estes Park Trail-Gazette . Their conditions were not immediately known. Firefighters extinguished spot fires inside the building, which has extensive roof damage. “The back ceiling came down, making it dicey as far as getting people in to fight the fire,” Richardson told the Trail-Gazette. “We made a search to make sure no other people were inside, and we put the fire out. The rear of the building is compromised.” No … [Read more...] about Estes Park distillery fire: 2 employees injured in possible explosion
