House passes bill to prevent violence in health care workplaces
The House passed legislation Friday that would require employers in the health care and social services industries to develop workplace violence prevention plans. Lawmakers passed the bill 254-166, with 38 Republicans voting with all Democrats in support. Studies show that workers such as nurses, physicians, social workers and emergency responders face a higher risk of on-the-job violence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics found in 2018 that the health care and social services industries are five times as likely to suffer workplace violence injuries. Health care workers specifically made up 73 percent of all nonfatal workplace injuries and illness due to violence that year. Douglas County’s TTEC to lay off 252 employees after client takes services in-house
The outsourcing customer-support company TTEC plans to lay off 252 employees after one of its clients switched to an in-house customer-service program. The Douglas County-based company notified state labor officials in an April 13 letter that the layoffs will start June 12 and will continue through July 10. The employees are generally hourly custom-service agents who work from home in locations across the country and report to TTEC Services Corp.’s headquarters. “The client has directly hired the majority of the employees and for the small number of employees who were not rehired, it is TTEC’s intention to re-deploy the affected employees on other programs to the extent possible,” TTEC spokesman Nick Cerise said in an email.
