Food is integral — for some American children, a meal at Howard Johnson’s was perhaps more memorable than the seaside or lakeside vacation that followed. For my father, brother and me, it was the Devonshire tea we stopped to eat along the Great Ocean Road on our way to camp at my father’s plot of land in the hills … [Read more...] about Yatala Pies Has Served Nostalgia for More Than 130 Years. Honeymoons for young couples
According to a famous poem by Philip Larkin, “sexual intercourse began in 1963.” It hardly seems accidental that “On Chesil Beach,” director Dominic Cooke’s new film, like the Ian McEwan novel on which it’s based, takes place mostly in the previous year. BLEECKER STREET Florence Ponting (Saoirse Ronan) and Edward Mayhew (Billy Howle) fall in love for the first time in “On Chesil Beach.” According to a famous poem by Philip Larkin, “sexual intercourse began in 1963.” It hardly seems accidental that “On Chesil Beach,” director Dominic Cooke’s new film, like the Ian McEwan novel on which it’s based, takes place mostly in the previous year. Movie review Theater director Dominic Cooke tackles Ian McEwan’s novel “On Chesil Beach,” adapted for the screen by McEwan himself. McEwan’s books have made for memorable film adaptations, most notably, “Atonement,” which gave Saoirse Ronan a breakout role 11 years ago. She’s now a two-time Oscar nominee and in-demand ingenue, and she returns to McEwan’s world as the star of “On Chesil Beach,” across from Billy Howle, playing a pair of young lovers in 1962 England. The plot of “On Chesil Beach” takes place over several disastrous hours in the honeymoon suite of a seaside hotel, just after the wedding of Florence (Ronan) and Edward (Howle). Things could not be more awkward for this young, virginal couple, alone, in private, for seemingly the first time ever in their relationship. As Edward nervously attempts to consummate the relationship, they’re both lost in the memories of their courtship, especially as … [Read more...] about ‘On Chesil Beach’: Uneven bedroom drama follows a disastrous honeymoon

Well, the honeymoon, obviously, but don't expect to hear any details about that, and anyway, it's rude to pry. Not that the gossip tabloids will care. (And it won't happen right away in any case; the couple have an engagement Tuesday in London with new father-in-law, Prince Charles.) Nevertheless, once they return, where will they live, and what will their new jobs be in the royal firm? How long will it take for Duchess Meghan to become a British citizen, not to mention accustom herself to driving on the other side of the road? Will she be able to curb her more political opinions, in keeping with the royal rule of staying above politics? And dare we hope to see more of this royal couple here in America as California-born Meghan returns to visit her friends and … [Read more...] about What’s next for Harry & Meghan?
