Could Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey ever have imagined that his social media platform would become a U.S. president’s preferred manner of communicating with the American electorate and beyond? It did, and the pattern became a familiar one: President Trump Donald Trump Biden to sign executive order aimed at increasing voting access Albany Times Union editorial board calls for Cuomo's resignation Advocates warn restrictive voting bills could end Georgia's record turnout MORE tweeted out to his Twitter “followers” — mostly his political base — but also, compulsorily, to those in the news media. Journalists then projected his 148-character statements to the country and the world. Trump ended his single presidential term banned from the platform, severely hobbled politically in part because of that. By now, articles on every topic, from politics to sports to culture, embed tweets and links to actual pages. Tech giants in brewing battle over tracking, ads
Silicon Valley giants are drawing battle lines over personal data collection practices and targeted ads as the threat of regulation looms. As Apple presses ahead with plans to give users greater control over their privacy, companies like Facebook and Google have aligned themselves over the latter's more measured approach to scaling back tracking features. In what was billed as the latest step toward data privacy, Google announced this week that it would not replace its tracking features used for personalized ads once it phases out its existing method. ADVERTISEMENT That move came after Apple drew Facebook's ire with its own anticipated anti-tracking feature, which could significantly affect the social media giant's revenue given its reliance on targeted ads. Experts and pro-privacy advocates say that while Google’s update may be a small step toward giving users more control over their data protection, the change may hurt Google’s rivals more than the company itself. … [Read more...] about Tech giants in brewing battle over tracking, ads
Drew Holden: Fighting cancel culture – here are the cases we should worry about the most
close Video Threat of cancel culture to freedom in America 'The Madness of Crowds' author Douglas Murray provides insight on ‘Fox and Friends.’ We’ve heard a lot about "cancel culture" of late. From debates about what it is and if it really exists to a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) dedicated to it, politicos of all stripes have weighed in. Just last week, Rep. The punishments vary but usually involve a loss of money or status – ensuring someone is fired or de-platformed , blackballing a company or product, invalidating awards or honors. … [Read more...] about Drew Holden: Fighting cancel culture – here are the cases we should worry about the most
Boulder police break up massive party on University Hill
A large, out-of-control party on University Hill raged for several hours Saturday evening until Boulder police were able to disperse the large crowd, but not before hundreds of people gathered with no social distancing, set off fireworks and flipped a car. Social media posts about the gathering near Pennsylvania Avenue and 10th Street began shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, as hundreds of college-aged revelers packed the street with no social distancing and very little mask wearing. Boulder police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said police estimated that there may have been up to 800 people in the area at one point. Waugh initially said police were “aware of what’s going on and have been developing a strategy response.” Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a Boulder police SWAT vehicle arrived and began telling those gathered over the loud speaker to disperse or face “arrest,” “tear gas,” or “use of force.” A large number of people dispersed upon seeing the police vehicle, but some … [Read more...] about Boulder police break up massive party on University Hill
