Independent Art Fair is back and in fine form. Returning to TriBeCa’s stylish Spring Studios after a brief dalliance farther downtown , this year’s edition of the modestly scaled but elegantly curated art fair features 17 new exhibitors, out of 67 in total, spread over four floors. Though its overall vibe is still more reassuring than revolutionary, an exciting, unsettled energy runs through its exhibits, and I found it more difficult than usual to make this standout list of only 10 picks. First Floor Chris Sharp It’s a cliché to call small paintings “jewel-like,” but it’s hard to resist with four little delights created by the painter Altoon Sultan , who debuted at Marlborough Gallery in the 1970s and now lives in Groton, Vermont. Painted with egg tempera on calfskin parchment, they show close-ups of agricultural machinery in near primary colors. Precise but not fussy, geometric but anchored in figuration, they appear drenched with sunlight even with no sightline … [Read more...] about An Elegant Return to Form at Independent Art Fair

Montana not following transgender birth certificate ruling
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — It's been a month since a Montana judge temporarily blocked enforcement of a state law that required transgender people to undergo surgery before they could change their gender on their birth certificate, and the state still isn't in compliance with the court order, the ACLU of Montana said. Jon Ebelt, spokesperson for the state health department, said the agency is still working with the Department of Justice to review the April 21 ruling and its implications. He did not respond to an email asking if that meant the state was evaluating whether to appeal the order. “We have continued to be patient in allowing the state time to comply with the court ordered preliminary injunction," the ACLU of Montana said in a recent statement. “However, close to one month has passed and the State’s willful indifference to the court order is inexcusable." Montana is among a growing list of Republican-controlled states that have moved to restrict transgender rights, including … [Read more...] about Montana not following transgender birth certificate ruling

6 great places for cooked oysters
Ever since Oysters Rockefeller was invented at Antoine's in New Orleans at the turn of the last century, restaurants from coast to coast have been trying to duplicate or improve on this much-loved recipe. While we love oysters raw, the baked, broiled and grilled versions never go out of style - which is why they've become a staple at many Bay Area restaurants. Here are six of my favorites: Brenda's French Soul Food The New Orleans-inspired menu offers three choices of broiled oysters ($2.75 each): Casino, with bacon, green onions, crumbles of Brenda's irresistible biscuits, Parmesan and gruyere cheeses; Tchoupitoulas, with cayenne butter, garlic and herbs; and Orleans, with a rich "blackened voodoo" barbecue sauce. 652 Polk St. (at Eddy), San Francisco; (415) 345-8100. frenchsoulfood.com. Breakfast and brunch or lunch daily; dinner Wednesday-Saturday. Suspect in Taiwanese church shooting charged with murder, aimed to “execute in cold blood” as many as possible, DA says
A Las Vegas man accused of killing a man and wounding five others at a Taiwanese church in California on Sunday, allegedly motivated by political tensions between China and Taiwan, was charged Tuesday with murder. David Chou, 68, faces 10 counts that include first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder and four counts of possessing destructive devices with the intent to kill or harm, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said Tuesday. Spitzer said at a news conference the charges carry penalties that could include death or life without the possibility of parole. "This is not a case that I'm ruling out for death," Spitzer said. He added that Chou's case was about a suspect concealing themselves in plain view before ambushing congregants. "He did everything he could to fit in, to make himself one of them," Spitzer said. Chou’s goal was to “execute in cold blood as many people in that room as possible," Spitzer said. "He had the ammunition to do it. He had … [Read more...] about Suspect in Taiwanese church shooting charged with murder, aimed to “execute in cold blood” as many as possible, DA says
