There has been no lava flow expansion since August 9, 2018. Minor activity within the fissure 8 cone continued into early September 2018 but did not expand the flow margins. Shaded purple areas depict lava flows erupted in 1840, 1955, 1960, and 2014-2015. (USGS map) Bright red polygon features were drawn by USGS Geographic Information Systems analysts around new or active lower East Rift Zone lava flows, which appear lighter in color due to their high temperature on this thermal map. Collected during a helicopter overflight on May 9, 2018, this map shows fissures 6 (left) and 15 (right) with Pohoiki … [Read more...] about Volcano Watch: How are lava-flow maps made during an eruption?

Hawaii Kilauea Volcano Update: Explosion, USGS Lava Flow Map
U.S. Hawaii Kilauea volcano Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted more than a month ago and liquid rock has been spewing from it and its fissures ever since. Lava flows have destroyed an entire neighborhood, traveling so far that it has reached the ocean and the mayor’s house on the island. A message from the Civil Defense Agency Thursday said fissure 8 was still very active and flowing. The lava was flowing into Kapoho Bay and the message said the bay was filled with lava Thursday. The delta of lava that the flows formed was 1.5 miles wide as of Thursday evening and was expanding from the isolated Vacationland area in the direction of Kapoho Beach Lots. Since the volcano first erupted, more than 113.5 million cubic meters of lava have spread across the island, with some making it into the ocean. It’s enough lava to cover the island of Manhattan in 6.5 feet deep of lava, according to the United States Geological Survey. Hawaii volcano lava flow reportedly nears geothermal plant’s property
close Video New volcano threat as lava reaches ocean in Hawaii Lava flows also seep over an important highway in Hawaii. Jeff Paul reports. Hawaiian officials on Monday said they were responding to reports of lava from the Kilauea volcano nearing the Big Island's geothermal plant, which could result in the release of dangerous gases and mandatory evacuations. Hawaii News Now reported that no wells at the 815-acre Puna Geothermal Venture’s property were threatened, but warned that if lava reaches a well it could cause the release of hydrogen sulfide, which is a dangerous gas. The Puna Geothermal Venture, known as PGV, is a "geothermal energy conversion plant bringing steam and hot liquid up through underground wells," according to the Hawaiian Electric Company. It provides 25 percent of the power to the Big Island, Reuters reported. Lava follows the path of steepest descent to the ocean. Ige activates National Guard, Red Cross opens 2 shelters as lava flows in lower Puna
UPDATE: 8:25 p.m. Hawaii Electric Light employees are going to the Leilani Estates area tonight to disconnect power in the places impacted by the active lava flow. Utility personnel are on scene. Although the areas near Mohala Street are without power, crews are doing work to reroute power to maintain electric service for the rest of Leilani Estates that is not impacted by the lava. The company expects to have sufficient generation for tonight, despite the emergency shutdown of independent power producer Puna Geothermal Venture. A generation shortfall is not expected. Check out this photo of the #lava on Mohala Street in Leiliani Estates that was taken by our crew earlier today. Lava flow emerges in Leilani Estates, prompting mandatory evacuations
COURTESY JANICE WEI At 10:30 a.m. today, ground shaking from a preliminary magnitude-5.0 earthquake south of Puu Oo caused rockfalls and possibly additional collapse into the Puu Oo crater on Kīlauea Volcano’s east rift zone. A short-lived plume of ash produced by this event lofted skyward and dissipated as it drifted southwest from Puu Oo.COURTESY COUNTY OF HAWAII Hawaii County Civil Defense is on high alert on a 24-hour basis for the possibility of a volcanic eruption in the lower Puna area. All areas bordering the East Rift Zone are at high risk for eruption activities.COUNTY OF HAWAII Due to persistently unstable volcanic activity and the possibility of a new eruption, park officials temporarily closed Naulu Trail, parts of Napau Trail and adjacent wilderness in Kilauea Volcano’s East Rift Zone for public safety today.
