Decades on, Soviet Bombs Still Killing People in Afghanistan
BAMIYAN, AFGHANISTAN - Gholam Mahaiuddin sighs softly as he thinks of his 14-year-old son, who was killed in the spring by a bomb dropped last century in the hills of Bamiyan province in central Afghanistan. "We knew the mountain was dangerous," said Mahaiuddin, who found his son's remains after he didn't come home one day. "We were aware of mines but we could not find them. They were buried in the soft sand after the rain." Forty years after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan – and three decades since the conflict ended – the war's legacy continues to claim lives across the country. Mahaiuddin's son, Moujtaba, was killed along with two friends, aged 12 and 14, on May 17 when they went looking for berries in this idyllic landscape where chocolate-colored mountains are topped with snow. When none of them had returned the next day, Mahaiuddin and other residents from his tiny village, called Ahangaran, started searching. Lebanese Burn Ruling Parties’ Offices after Night of Clashes
BEIRUT - Attackers in northern Lebanon set fire to the offices of two major political parties on Sunday, the state-run National News Agency said. The assaults came just hours after the capital Beirut was rocked by the most violent government crackdown on protesters since nationwide demonstrations began two months ago. Lebanese security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and used water cannons throughout the night to disperse anti-government protesters from the city center - the epicenter of the protest movement in Beirut - and around parliament. The overnight confrontations in Beirut left more than 130 people injured, according to the Red Cross and the Lebanese Civil Defense. In the northern Akkar district on Sunday, attackers broke the windows and torched the local office for resigned Prime Minister Saad Hariri's political party in the town of Kharibet al-Jindi. In a separate attack in Akkar district, assailants stormed the local office of the largest party in parliament, … [Read more...] about Lebanese Burn Ruling Parties’ Offices after Night of Clashes
A student in New Mexico was arrested on a gun charge. A tipster told the FBI he had a kill list
(CNN)A student attending a New Mexico university was arrested on federal court charges a day before his graduation, according to court documents and his attorney. Hassan Alqahtani, 27, an engineering student at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, according to an affidavit from the US District Court for the District of New Mexico. He was arrested Friday after the FBI served a search warrant on his home on Thursday and found a .380-caliber firearm, ammunition and a box for the firearm, according to the documents. Prosecutors claim Alqahtani was interested in buying other firearms, including an AK-47 rifle. Authorities began investigating Alqahtani after a person sent a tip to the FBI National Threat Operations Center in August, claiming Alqahtani, a Saudi Arabian citizen, was putting together "a list of people who he wants to kill before he leaves the US" and that he had a firearm, the federal affidavit said.
