(UPI) — The U.S. military used two F-15E Strike Eagles in its airstrikes on Iranian-backed militias in eastern Syria, the Pentagon said in a briefing detailing the firepower the attack. Defense Department press secretary John Kirby said the aircraft dropped seven precision-guided munitions on the targets Thursday. The strikes completely destroyed nine facilities and partially destroyed two others in Abu-Kamal near a control point used by Kait’ib Hezbollah and Kait’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, among other Iran-backed groups. The attack was in response to a rocket attack against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq last week that killed a contractor and injured several others. “These targets were chosen carefully, very deliberately,” Kirby said. “This really was a defensive strike meant to help protect … American forces and coalition partners.” Saudi broadcaster Al Hadath said the missile strikes killed at least 17 Shiite militia members, but Kirby declined to confirm the number of … [Read more...] about U.S. Used F-15E Strike Eagles, Precision-Guided Munitions in Syria Airstrikes

Boulder moving toward final segment of 28th Street project
In 2019, Tila Duhaime recalls taking a city-led bike ride along 28th Street from Valmont Road to Iris Avenue as part of a capital improvements tour ahead of a project scheduled along that stretch of road. Duhaime, chair of the city’s Transportation Advisory Board , is an avid cyclist, but she said the experience was “terrifying and uncomfortable and unpleasant.” At the end of the ride, Duhaime said it was clear to her that improvements were necessary. Boulder in about a year is scheduled to begin construction on the north segment of the 28th Street project . The full project, which was split into three segments and cost about $30 million in full, is more than two decades in the making. By the city’s estimation, the final segment will take anywhere from nine to 12 months to complete once construction begins in early to mid-2022. According to Gerrit Slatter, principal transportation projects engineer, the last segment, which extends from Canyon Boulevard to Iris Avenue, … [Read more...] about Boulder moving toward final segment of 28th Street project

Family sues ex-Rocky Ford cop, former chief and city in on-duty police shooting death
The family of a Rocky Ford man killed by a police officer now wants the city and the department’s former chief to pay for hiring James Ashby and for failing to discipline him. Jack Jacquez’s mother, Viola B. Jacquez , and the mothers of his three children filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday against Ashby, former Chief Frank Gallegos and the city of Rocky Ford. The lawsuit claims Jack Jacquez’s constitutional protections against wrongful searches and seizures were violated because Ashby stopped the 27-year-old for no legitimate reason and then followed Jacquez into his home where he was fatally shot in the back in front of his mother. “This is a case about a police department that hires ‘ second-chance cop s’ without any vetting,” the lawsuit says. “It is about a police department that gave a badge to one such officer, yet failed to provide him with any training regarding excessive force, including deadly force. And it is a case about an officer who regularly resorted to excessive … [Read more...] about Family sues ex-Rocky Ford cop, former chief and city in on-duty police shooting death
Regulators Considered Extra Scrutiny Of Airplane Engine Before It Caught Fire Mid-Flight And Dropped Parts Over Colorado
Regulators had already considered mandating additional scrutiny on some Pratt & Whitney engines before one on a Boeing 777-200 fell apart mid-flight over the weekend. The preliminary investigation into the Hawaii-bound United Airlines flight, which conducted an emergency landing in Denver on Saturday, showed there was metal fatigue on one of the engine’s 22 fan blades, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators said late Monday night. The weakened blade is thought to have then interfered with and sliced a second blade. “A preliminary on-scene exam indicates damage consistent with metal fatigue,” NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said. (RELATED: Second Boeing Plane Fails Mid-Flight, Forcing Emergency Landing) Sumwalt added that Pratt & Whitney will examine the recovered blade at its factory on Tuesday alongside NTSB investigators.
