"We’ve kind of done it different ways as far as traffic and tips and just some good plays along the way," Pavelski said. "It’s clicking. It’s good to see when the puck’s going in. You’ve just got to stay with it. You can’t get too cute with it." … [Read more...] about Stars tie NHL power-play record in 3-2 win over Predators

UK doctor warns world may need annual COVID-19 vaccine due to variants
The good news in the U.K. is that its vaccination program is moving ahead rapidly, faster than any of its European peers. Up to Saturday, nearly 6.4 million people have received at least one coronavirus vaccine dose, and Mr. Hancock said three-quarters of people over the age of 80, as well as people in three-quarters of nursing homes across the country, had received a shot. … [Read more...] about UK doctor warns world may need annual COVID-19 vaccine due to variants
Japan Wants to Throw COVID-19 Patients in Jail If They Refuse to Go to the Hospital
The country that once bragged it had contained the virus due to “the superiority of the Japanese people”—as Minister of Finance Taro Aso proclaimed in June—is now resorting to stiff fines and imprisonment to curb the largest spike in cases yet. Japan will not be the first developed country to institute harsh penalties for violating coronavirus restrictions: France and Italy imposed strict fines on people leaving their homes; the UK allowed for fines of upwards of £10,000 for people breaking, or inciting others to break, the rules or deliberately spreading the virus. She said that it might see an explosion in the number of infections if it failed to act. She used the word “lockdown” as if it came out of the blue and asked everyone to refrain from leaving their homes—for that weekend. … [Read more...] about Japan Makes Saving Face a Priority Over Saving Lives
Japan’s Ruthless New PM Is a Control Freak Who Muzzled the Press
He is also an avid reader. One of his favorite books is a novel about Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) who rose from a peasant background to become one of the most powerful rulers in Japan. It’s easy to see why Suga admires him. Toyotomi operated in the shadows most of his life but when he seized power, he ruled effectively and brutally. He launched a failed war to take over Korea in 1592, a war of such epic cruelty that even Japanese scholars of the time noted the terrible atrocities. Toyotomi was also very vain, despite the fact that Lord Nobunaga had dubbed him “kozaru” (little monkey) because of his simian appearance and stature. In the LDP, some of Suga’s opponents call him “kozaru” behind his back—but never to his face. … [Read more...] about Japan’s Ruthless New PM Is a Control Freak Who Muzzled the Press
