Gavin Newsom lifted stay-home orders across the state, a travel advisory discouraging people from traveling more than 120 miles from home remains in effect. In an email to the Chronicle, the California Department of Public Health confirmed that its travel advisory, updated on Jan. 6, still stands. It urges Californians to forgo non-essential travel and to avoid leaving the state. “Avoiding travel reduces the risk of virus transmission, including by reducing the risk that new sources of infection and, potentially, new virus strains will be introduced to California,” it reads. It also “strongly” discourages non-essential travelers from coming into California and adds that, if they do, they should quarantine for at least 10 days upon arrival. A series of storms moving across California over the next eight days are expected to bring between 5 feet and 10 feet of snow to the Tahoe Basin — filling in the dry slopes, attracting eager skiers and prompting some local trepidation about the possibility of a COVID resurgence. "We're going to get hit hard," said Bryan Allegretto, daily snow forecaster specializing in the Tahoe region for OpenSnow, a weather prediction app geared towards skiers and snowboarders. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for the Sierra region through Friday morning. Allegretto's models show a set of storms moving into Tahoe from the north on Tuesday night then sweeping back and forth across the Sierra Nevada for eight days.
