Britain’s Electoral Commission has rejected efforts to register Black Lives Matter as a political party on grounds that it would be “likely to mislead voters”. “The application to register Black Lives Matter as a political party was refused by the Commission on the basis that the proposed name is likely to mislead a voter as to the effect of their vote,” said a spokesman for the controversial regulator in comments reported by MailOnline. “As part of our considerations we examined the existing groups by the same or similar names in the UK. Having contacted a number of groups, they confirmed that the party was not associated with them,” the spokesman explained. “Our assessment concluded that, whilst the BLM movement is a grassroots movement, it was still likely that the proposed name would mislead a voter as to the effect of their vote. This was on the basis that a reasonable voter could assume that the party represents, or is in some way associated with, these groups when … [Read more...] about UK Regulator Stops BLM Registering as Political Party – ‘Likely to Mislead Voters’

States need to ensure student journalists have press freedom
Rhamil Aloysius Taguba is a sophomore at Southwest Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) For many young journalists across the US, there is a roadblock to publishing the truth. It's the 1988 Supreme Court Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier decision, which allows schools to regulate content for high school and college newspapers they sponsor. The decision says that a school has a right to exercise editorial control if it has "legitimate pedagogical concerns." Since the decision does not specify what those concerns can entail, it's easy to see how this puts our freedom of speech under attack. During Student Press Freedom Day on Friday, it's important to highlight what's at stake when student journalists are censored in this way and what can be done. Rhamil Aloysius Taguba It has taken a toll on student voice and freedom of speech overall. George Floyd kin joins protest anthem album project
NEW YORK — Before a late night rehearsal in December, Terrence Floyd couldn’t remember the last time he squatted on a drum throne, sticks in hand and ready to perform. Surely, he said, it had not happened since his brother, George Floyd, died at the hands of police in Minneapolis last May, sparking a global reckoning over systemic racism and police brutality. Now, Terrence is lending a talent he honed as a youngster in a church band to help produce and promote a forthcoming album of protest anthems inspired by the Black Lives Matter demonstrations prompted in part by his brother’s death. “I want to pay my respects to my brother any way I can, whether it’s a march, whether it’s just talking to somebody about him, or whether it’s doing what I do and playing the drums,” Terrence told The Associated Press. “His heartbeat is not beating no more,” he said, “but I can beat for him.” The untitled project, set for release one year after George Floyd’s death, follows a long history … [Read more...] about George Floyd kin joins protest anthem album project
Amanda Chase complicates Virginia GOP’s path to governor’s mansion
A Virginia state senator and gubernatorial candidate who has described herself as “Trump in heels” is emerging as a problem for the state’s Republican party as they seek to take the governor’s mansion. Amanda Chase boasts enthusiastic grassroots support in pockets of the state. But she has also drawn bipartisan rebuke for incendiary statements calling for martial law to overturn the 2020 presidential election and seemingly expressing support for the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol. That's left Democrats eager to paint her as the face of the state’s Republican Party. Chase on Tuesday filed a lawsuit alleging that the Republican Party was attempting to tank her candidacy, accusing the state GOP of trying to force a situation where the party’s executive committee selects a gubernatorial nominee rather than a traditional convention or primary.
