Silicon Valley venture capitalist Peter Thiel made campaign history Thursday when he stood on the stage of the Republican convention and declared, "I am proud to be gay," he said to cheers and a standing ovation from the delegates, as he said words never before uttered from the podium during a GOP convention. "I am proud to be a Republican," he continued. "But most of all I am proud to be an American." 5 things to know about Peter Thiel The openly gay 48-year-old PayPal cofounder admitted that his views differ from those of many Republicans, who adopted a platform with no concessions to LGBT issues during this convention. "I don't pretend to agree with every plank in our party's platform," Thiel said. "But fake culture wars only distract us from our economic decline. And nobody in this race is being honest about it except Donald Trump." "When I was a kid, the great debate was about how to defeat the Soviet Union, and we won." Thiel said. "Now we are told that the great debate is … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Peter Thiel declares “I am proud to be gay” at GOP convention

Is Donald Trump gaining ground on Hillary Clinton? After a rough few weeks, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee got a welcome bit of good news on Wednesday with the release of new Quinnipiac polls showing him rising in several key swing states. And it's a good time for some good news: as Republicans begin gathering in Cleveland ahead of next week's GOP convention, the party is striving to project an image of unity and forward momentum after a bruising and divisive primary season. In Pennsylvania, Trump is now up by two points, 43 to 41 percent. Last month, he was down one point in the Keystone State. In Ohio, the race is tied, with both candidates at 41 percent. All three results are within the poll's margin of error, so they shouldn't be interpreted as a sure sign that Trump has taken the lead in … [Read more...] about Ahead of GOP convention, is Donald Trump gaining ground?
In his combative speech to the GOP convention on Wednesday night, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz notably declined to endorse Donald Trump and urged voters to follow their conscience. The address, and the boos it drew from the Trump fans assembled in Cleveland, laid bare the internal GOP divisions that convention planners were hoping to minimize. Whether Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is able to successfully exploit the GOP divisions this year will remain an open question until November. But it's likely her team is eyeing the example then-President Lyndon Baines Johnson set in 1964 during his campaign against his Republican rival, Barry Goldwater. Goldwater, an Arizona senator, was a big draw among the GOP base. But he frightened the party's establishment with his opposition to civil rights and his bellicose rhetoric about the Cold War and nuclear weapons. Johnson's reelection campaign made a point of courting moderate Republicans who were leery of Goldwater's conservative insurgency. And one … [Read more...] about That time Democrats sought to exploit GOP convention strife
