Unspecified sellers in China are increasingly using online venues to advertise Uyghurs for sale in “batches of 50 to 100 workers,” Sky News revealed on Friday. “On Chinese websites, there are dozens of postings advertising Uighur [sic] labour, in batches of 50 to 100 workers,” Sky News reported on April 16. “Baidu, the company hosting the job postings, did not respond to a request for comment.” Baidu is a Chinese multinational technology company providing Internet-related services, including China’s top search engine. The Baidu advertisements suggested Uyghur laborers were under “tight political and social controls,” according to Sky News, which noted that one posting stated the “security of workers will be guaranteed by the government.” Sky did not mention the ads suggesting the workers would be compensated in any way. Roughly 10 million Turkic-speaking Uyghurs live in Xinjiang, China’s westernmost territory bordering Central Asia. Let’s say ‘goodbye’ to the April 15 due date
Due to the pandemic, the IRS extended the due date for 2020 individual income tax returns from April 15 to May 17. Some people want it extended further. We should instead be asking: Considering today’s technology, why do we still cling to any due date? Over two decades ago, technology created e-commerce that enabled us to make purchases 24/7, without having to fill out an order form. Online banking means no trips to the bank or ATM, no need for monthly statements to be mailed to us, and we have 24/7 access. Even medical records and prescriptions can all be securely handled online. In contrast, individual income tax filing continues as it has for decades — we wait for paper W-2 and 1099 forms to be physically mailed to us in January, we then enter our data into a software program or send it to a tax return preparer. We review the printed or online forms before e-filing or paper mailing the return by the stated due date. Executives Received Record Pay Amid Pandemic In 2020
Corporate CEOs received record compensation in 2020 even as the coronavirus pandemic rocked the economy and millions lost their jobs, according to the Wall Street Journal. CEOs of the 322 largest U.S. corporations saw their median pay increase from $12.8 million in 2019 to $13.7 million last year, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of compensation packages. CEO compensation skyrocketed while nearly 20 million Americans were laid off and the unemployment rate surged to 14.8% last year, the highest recorded rate since the 1930s. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like this before in terms of the number of changes we’ve seen in incentive plans” Shaun Bisman, a consultant at Compensation Advisory Partners, told the WSJ. More than 200 of the CEOs saw pay raises, according to the WSJ analysis. The average pay increase was about 15%, the data showed. How to solve the statehood issue
The full House of Representatives is set for a vote in the coming days to make the District of Columbia a state. The bill is a priority for Democrats and the White House. Senators are calling for the killing of the filibuster rule to allow D.C. to become a state with just 51 votes after a tie breaker by Vice President Kamala Harris. There has been comparatively little debate of the bill in the House, where perfunctory hearings rushed it to the floor. What was missing by design in the House was any acknowledgment, let alone consideration, of alternatives to creating the first Vatican-like city-state in the country. Most importantly, there was no discussion of what district citizens could gain from an alternative to statehood — retrocession. The country remains sharply divided over D.C. statehood despite years of advocacy and overwhelming media support. In January, a Harris/Hill poll showed 52 percent of respondents favoring statehood while 48 percent opposed it. In March, … [Read more...] about How to solve the statehood issue
