LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) — The IndyCar championship race faces a major shakeup at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, where the top title contenders struggled and Pato O'Ward won the pole to match a series mark set in 1961. O'Ward became the ninth different pole winner through nine races this season — the first time that's happened in 61 years — and the Arrow McLaren SP driver now has a shot at the IndyCar points lead. The modern-day record for different drivers winning the pole to start a season is 10 in 1952. “This is huge man, it's a track position race,” O'Ward said of the difficulty to pass on Mid-Ohio's 13- turn, 2.258-mile course. “It's a long race. A lot can happen but we have a great starting position.” The championship leaders will start Sunday's race mired in deep traffic. Marcus Ericsson, Will Power and Josef Newgarden all failed to advance out of the first group of Saturday qualifying, then reigning series champion Alex Palou was knocked out of the second round. … [Read more...] about Pato O’Ward snags Mid-Ohio pole as title contenders struggle

Why Nobody Should Want to Play for New York
And it’s not just about demanding fans. Photo: Erick W. Rasco/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images Until the Mets reportedly settled on former Angels general manager Billy Eppler as their new general manager Monday night, we had reached the point of their Mets’ desperate search for a GM that if you had not personally received an invitation to interview, they must have had your old number. As many as 12 different candidates for the job refused to even meet with the Mets, and their inability to find someone to fill what should, theoretically, be one of the most desired jobs in the sport (there are only 30 general managers in the Majors, after all) had become one of baseball’s running jokes. Though considering someone needs to be in charge of all the offseason moves the team clearly needs to make — assuming baseball’s looming labor fight doesn’t wipe out the offseason all together — you can forgive Mets fans for not laughing. There are an abundance of reasons that the Mets had … [Read more...] about Why Nobody Should Want to Play for New York
Mike Lupica: In the end, thin-skinned Kevin Durant wasn’t built for Brooklyn
The NBA has become a league dominated by headlines about whining, entitled stars acting like complete losers, even if they’ve won championships the way Kevin Durant has. The biggest headlines this week are about Durant, of course, who’s decided he’s unhappy with his current circumstances, and wants to go sit at another table where he thinks the cool kids are. And then there Kyrie Irving who, if there is any justice, will still be in Brooklyn now that Durant seeks the same greener pastures for which Irving keeps searching, even as he has now opted back into his own deal with the Nets. Send up a flare when Irving, who sabotaged any chance the Nets had to be anything last season because of his refusal to get vaccinated, wins another title. Why did he refuse? Because Irving thinks he knows more than the doctors, something that is no real surprise, since he thinks he knows more than everybody about pretty much everything. It is hard to think of the last player in the pros to have less … [Read more...] about Mike Lupica: In the end, thin-skinned Kevin Durant wasn’t built for Brooklyn

Leury García comes through in the 9th, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 1-0 win against the San Francisco Giants
Leury García came up with the go-ahead run at second base and two outs in the top of the ninth. The Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants were scoreless. The Sox second baseman had one thing on his mind. “Bring the guys in,” he said. García did just that, knocking in Adam Haseley with a single to right to lead the Sox to a 1-0 victory Friday night. Haseley scored just ahead of Mike Yastrzemski’s throw as the Sox won the opener of the three-game series in thrilling fashion in front of 35,266 at Oracle Park. “I know (reliever Camilo Doval) is a pretty good pitcher,” García said. “Everybody knows that. Dalen Terry welcomes the challenge — and support — from Patrick Williams in his 1st Chicago Bulls practice
Rookie Dalen Terry ended his first official practice as a Chicago Bull with a show of support from teammate Patrick Williams. Williams picked out the Bulls rookie as the top competitor of the practice, highlighting Terry’s energy on his first day scrimmaging against his new teammates as he prepares for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas next week. The Bulls selected Terry with the 18th pick of the draft last month. “It gave me a little bit more confidence,” Terry said. “He was here last year, he’s been through what I’ve been through. So for him to do that is definitely a nod and respect, and I appreciate him for saying that.” Williams, the Bulls’ pick at No. 4 in 2020 , provided an immediate challenge for Terry, who is relishing the chance to face off against professional players in his first days at the Advocate Center. Bulls Summer League coach John Bryant said the two had a fair amount of friendly trash talk in their limited matchups on the first day of practice. … [Read more...] about Dalen Terry welcomes the challenge — and support — from Patrick Williams in his 1st Chicago Bulls practice
Haywood Highsmith begins earning his keep for summer Heat
There were no guarantees when Haywood Highsmith reported for summer-league duty with the Miami Heat this past week in San Francisco. Now, there is an investment. Without a move by the team by Friday’s deadline, Highsmith received a $50,000 guarantee toward his $1.8 million 2022-23 salary. Added by the Heat amid the team’s COVID breakout in December and then brought back for the balance of the season in February, Highsmith is with the team’s roster for summer leagues this month in San Francisco and Las Vegas. His next guarantee date is opening night of the regular season, when an additional $400,000 of his salary would be guaranteed. Having previously spent time with the Philadelphia 76ers and their G League affiliate, Highsmith, at 6 feet 6, is being tested as an undersized power forward. For now, he is letting the financial aspects take care of themselves, as he works toward a roster spot while also mentoring the younger players on the team’s summer roster. “To be … [Read more...] about Haywood Highsmith begins earning his keep for summer Heat
The surprising reason supermarkets sell flowers
New York (CNN Business) All stores have marketing tactics to get you in the door — stylish mannequins, elaborate display windows, posters screaming about all the discounts you can find inside. But some are far more subtle, so much so that chances are you've hardly ever noticed them. Picture your local grocery store, for example. What do you see when you first walk in? Most likely: Flowers. Big, bright bouquets of fresh-cut blooms greet shoppers inside just about every major grocer, from Whole Foods to Kroger to innumerable New York City bodegas. That's no coincidence — there's a strategic decision behind those flowers' placement. "It is very, very simple," says Paco Underhill, the founder and CEO of behavioral research and consulting firm Envirosell. "If you can get someone's nose and saliva glands working, they become a much less disciplined shopper." Read More That's right: Flowers fire up the senses, getting you ready to spend. Sure, … [Read more...] about The surprising reason supermarkets sell flowers
Medication abortion is common; here’s how it works
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Medication abortions became the preferred method for ending pregnancy in the U.S. even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. These involve taking two prescription medicines days apart — at home or in a clinic. Abortion procedures are an invasive medical technique that empties the womb. They are sometimes called surgical abortions, although they don’t involve surgery. Abortion by pills involves the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. As more states seek abortion limits, demand for the pills is expected to grow. HOW THE DRUGS WORK Mifepristone is taken first, swallowed by mouth. The drug dilates the cervix and blocks the effects of the hormone progesterone, which is needed to sustain a pregnancy. Misoprostol, a drug also used to treat stomach ulcers, is taken 24 to 48 hours later. The pill is designed to dissolve when placed between the gums and teeth or in the … [Read more...] about Medication abortion is common; here’s how it works
