Many, if not most, foodstuffs in other countries take their name from their place of origin, such as practically any cheese from Europe (as do the continent’s wines). Did you see Stanley Tucci’s first installment of his series “Searching for Italy” on CNN on Feb. 14? He traipsed in and around Naples and the Amalfi Coast and, at one point, ate at a restaurant on the island of Ischia and enjoyed one of his favorite dishes from there, coniglio all’ischiana, rabbit done as on the island of Ischia. Like countless recipes from Italy, France and Spain (to name just three countries), the recipe tells the main ingredient and, in this case as in many others, politically incorrectly assumes that the cook be a woman. (In fact, on the show, the rabbit was prepared by a very large male, part-owner of the place with his many other family members.) We, too, have foods named after places (Boston baked beans, Chicago hot dogs, San Francisco sourdough, and so on), but not to such a degree as the … [Read more...] about Get Cooking: Tortilla Espanola

Drunk Driver Trying To Escape Police Ends Up Biting K-9, Barks At Officers
A California man who was trying to evade police Saturday night was eventually caught – only after he bit a police K-9 and barked at officers, according to authorities. Jorge Bucioperez was driving a silver minivan Saturday night near the area of Houghton Avenue and Butte Street, according to a press release from the Corning Police Department. An officer said Bucioperez ran a stop sign. While attempting to pull Bucioperez over, police say he ended up leading the office on a high speed chase , with Bucioperez going 75 miles per hour at one point. Eventually Bucioperez jumped out of the vehicle and began running through random backyards. Police K-9 Blaze was released, chasing and apprehending Bucioperez. However, Bucioperez wasn’t willing to go down easy. Netflix’s ‘I Care a Lot’ should worry you
A stranger knocks on the door. The older woman who answers the door is informed that the visitor is now her legal guardian and will make all decisions for her. Within days, the older woman has been placed in a nursing home and her home sold so that the stranger may profit. It’s a perfect opening for a psychological thriller. In fact, it is the opening for Netflix’s new featured movie “ I Care a Lot ,” starring Rosamund Pike as Marla, a ruthlessly ambitious woman who has made a business out of exploiting older adults. Her method: petitioning a local court to appoint her as emergency guardian for older adults whom she alleges cannot make decisions for themselves. Unfortunately, the plot of “I Care a Lot” — despite its share of plot twists and theatrics — is not as far-fetched as it might seem. Every state allows courts to appoint a third party (called a “guardian” or “conservator”) to make decisions for someone the court determines is at risk because they lack the ability to make … [Read more...] about Netflix’s ‘I Care a Lot’ should worry you
Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
