WHO calls for ‘reality check’ as global Covid-19 cases surge for seventh week
(CNN) The World Health Organization has warned that the world needs a "reality check" on the state of the pandemic, as countries abandon restrictions despite four weeks of rising deaths and seven weeks of rising cases globally. Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead for coronavirus response, said 4.4 million Covid-19 infections had been recorded across the world last week globally and expressed concern about global trends. "This is not the situation we want to be in 16 months into a pandemic, where we have proven control measures. It is time right now where everyone has to have a reality check about what we need to be doing," van Kerkhove told a news briefing Monday. Several countries in Asia and the Middle East have seen large increases in cases, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, noting that "confusion, complacency and inconsistency in public health measures" were primary drivers. How AstraZeneca’s latest vaccine troubles could slow the global recovery
London (CNN Business) AstraZeneca's vaccine is key to ending the global economic slump caused by the coronavirus. But a series of missteps by the drugmaker and new concerns over blood clots risk undermining public confidence in the shot and delaying the recovery. European drug regulators said there was a possible link between the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 shot and rare blood clots on Wednesday, but stopped short of recommending its use be limited. UK authorities recommended that people under 30 take alternative vaccines. It's the latest setback for AstraZeneca ( AZN ) , which has faced criticism over its communication with the public and regulators, the design of its vaccine trials and severe production delays that have slowed the rollout of shots in Europe. Authorities maintain that the benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the risks for most age groups. Yet shifting guidance and blood clot worries risk snarling distribution efforts in many … [Read more...] about How AstraZeneca’s latest vaccine troubles could slow the global recovery
The Memo: Specter of vaccine hesitancy rises after J&J blow
The pause in the use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine announced Tuesday is virtually certain to exacerbate vaccine hesitancy, dealing a fresh blow to the nation’s efforts to recover from the pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy is on its way to becoming the main hurdle in the fight against the virus, experts say. Vaccinations are becoming more plentiful. The nation has recently been averaging more than 3 million vaccination shots per day, bringing relief to people desperate for protection against a virus that has claimed more than 560,000 lives in the United States. ADVERTISEMENT But what happens when all those people are vaccinated? Millions of Americans seem likely to decline the vaccine — and their reluctance is only heightened by any bad news, such as the suspension of the J&J vaccine. Vaccine hesitancy “is a significant worry,” said Larry Gostin, a Georgetown Law School professor and expert in public health. Gostin noted that reluctance to be vaccinated had … [Read more...] about The Memo: Specter of vaccine hesitancy rises after J&J blow
